After retiring 10 years ago, E. Douglass Ayer Jr.<\/strong> continues to live in Lexington, Va. He teaches at Virginia Military Institute. One daughter works in theater production in New York and the other recently graduated from Cal Tech…. Mary Morton Cowan’s<\/strong> book Timberrr: A History of Logging in New England,<\/em> won one of Maine’s highest children’s literature awards, a Lupine Honor Award, presented annually by the Youth Services Section of the Maine State Library Assn., to recognize an outstanding contribution to children’s literature of Maine. This award is granted to encourage the reading, writing, and appreciation of children’s books, and to foster pride in the state of Maine. Mary’s book presents the history of logging from early beginnings to current ecological controversies…. Paul<\/strong> and Freda Shepherd Maier<\/strong> enjoyed a rail trip to Switzerland last fall, led by classmate George Drury<\/strong>…. On Martin Luther King Day in January, Parker Marden<\/strong>, president of Manchester College in northern Indiana, received an honorary degree from Martin Univ. in Indianapolis in recognition of his leadership among Indiana’s independent colleges and his friendship…. Harold Smith<\/strong> retired this spring. He and Roberta will travel cross-country before settling somewhere in the Southeast. <\/p>\n
