In February, New England Cable News followed up on a visit by Maine\u2019s 2nd District Rep. Michael Michaud to inspect Bates\u2019 environmental initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Michaud and NECN visited a lab where biodiesel is made from used cooking oil and heard about the \u201cgreen\u201d aspects of the new student housing and dining Commons projects. President Elaine Tuttle Hansen, housing project manager Pam Wichroski, and geo major Maria Jenness \u201907 were among Bates people in the NECN spot.<\/p>\n<p>Also on hand was geology professor Beverly Johnson, who works with students on the biodiesel pilot project. Shortly before Michaud\u2019s visit, Johnson commented to the <em>Maine Sunday Telegram<\/em> about the high-profile United Nations report describing threats posed by global climate change.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/Images\/Bates_Magazine\/2007-summer\/main\/studentsmichaud.jpg\" align=\"middle\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"5\" vspace=\"5\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>At right, U.S. Rep. The students showed Michaud a bench-scale biofuels process that converts used vegetable oil from the College&#8217;s dining services to a fuel that can be burned in furnaces for heat. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Short Terms<\/h3>\n<p>As the Bates Dance Festival prepared for its 25th anniversary season, festival director <strong>Laura Faure<\/strong> took part in a May gathering of Maine performers and arts administrators. Faure talked with the <em>Maine Sunday Telegram<\/em> about the annual conference of the Maine Performing Arts Network, which hopes to boost the fortunes of theater and dance in the state. \u201cBusiness as usual doesn\u2019t work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Historian <strong>Michael Jones<\/strong> talked with The History Channel about the ancient Saxons for the program <em>Barbarians 2<\/em>. It first aired in March.<\/p>\n<p>.Admissions dean <strong>Wylie Mitchell<\/strong> revealed to National Public Radio a practical implication of the College\u2019s lack of a requirement for standardized test scores. Dealing with the extra materials Bates applicants tend to submit in lieu of SAT scores is time-consuming, he explained, and admissions staffers normally read each applicant\u2019s folder cover to cover, multiple times. \u201cIf we had 16,000 applications, we\u2019d be hard-pressed to do that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rebecca Herzig<\/strong>, associate professor of women and gender studies, co-convened a gathering of scholars whose research into the phenomenon of \u201cmedicalization\u201d appeared in the prestigious medical journal <em>The Lancet<\/em>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Reporting on drug and alcohol abuse on campuses nationwide, <em>USA Today<\/em> quoted President Emeritus <strong>Donald Harward<\/strong>\u2019s thoughts about students\u2019 need to reconnect with academic and civil life. Harward helms the Bringing Theory to Practice Project, a national effort to effect that reconnection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Hooglund<\/strong>, professor of politics, talked with Agence France Presse about the Bush administration\u2019s inflexible approach to Iraq. \u201c[T]hey can\u2019t even listen to what the Republicans are saying,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to statistics for alumni giving, which in turn affect a college\u2019s place in rankings like <em>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/em>\u2019s, Bates plays it straight, <strong>Kimberly Hokanson<\/strong> told <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m not into quick fixes\u201d like asking for token gifts just to boost participation rates, the College\u2019s director of alumni and parent programs said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seen as Green Bates\u2019 progress toward environmental sustainability made news.
