\nNext Reunion in 2001.\u00a0Jamie Merisotis<\/strong>, founding president of the Institute for Higher Education Policy in Washington, D.C., was named a “young leader in academe” in the January\/February 1998 issue of\u00a0Change,<\/em> the journal of the American Association of Higher Education. Merisotis was included among more than 80 people deemed to be the “past, present, and future” leaders of higher education. The list, compiled from the results of some 11,000 questionnaires, was broken into four categories: senior leaders inside academe, supporters of education outside the academy, influential leaders defined as “agenda-setters,” and young leaders in academe. Merisotis was among those highlighted in the magazine, and he offered comments on the state of higher education today: “The greatest challenge lies in reasserting the social and democratic role of higher education. In the last two decades…we fundamentally lost the national policy arguments about public benefits of higher education. Today, the discourse is overwhelmingly slanted toward the individual, usually monetary, gains that result from college attendance…. This ‘lowest common denominator’ approach to the benefits of higher education may have had short-term value, but over the long term it could have a ruinous effect on the ability of higher education to serve the nation’s interests effectively.” Merisotis is also vice president of the Bates Alumni Council.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Her husband is a family physician. They have one child, a 90-pound dogs named Cato, and they try to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible. Carolyn’s also proud to report that her brother-in-law will enter Bates as part of the Class of ’02….\u00a0Eric Cantor<\/strong> “finally” received his Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from UMass in September 1997. He’s now a postdoctoral research fellow at New England Biolabs in Beverly, Mass., and has that golfin’ bug, too….\u00a0Dennis Connelly<\/strong> and your class secretary keep crossing paths on the road. First at the Providence Home Show and again at a lumberyard in East Haven, Conn. Dennis is the director of marketing and development for Lumber Finishers Inc. out of Pelham, N.Y., a firm that specializes in prestained and preprimed siding….\u00a0Laura Giles Longacre<\/strong> is the chair of the foreign language department at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut….\u00a0Emily Goldfarb<\/strong> is back in school getting her M.B.A. She’s also engaged and is looking for a time to plan the big event. Last September, Emily endured a flight to Australia but assures us that the visit was well worth it. Over the holidays, she saw\u00a0Peter Garrecht <\/strong>and reports that he’s doing great up in Burlington, Vt….\u00a0Lynn Grondin Hannum<\/strong>has entered her final year of grad school at Yale. The Hannums hope to get back to Maine once Lynn graduates. Daughter Bailey is 6 and was eagerly waiting for the ol’ stork to drop off her new baby sister this past spring….\u00a0Kari Heistad<\/strong> is still with the United Nations Assn. of Greater Boston. She recently met U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and is editing a model U.N. curriculum that has been used by more than 19,000 students worldwide….\u00a0Todd Holbrook<\/strong>, litigation attorney at the venerable Maine law firm of Bernstein, Shur, Sawyer & Nelson, was named chair of the Maine State Bar Assn. Committee on Computer Law and the Internet. Todd concentrates his practice in the areas of commerce and technology, intellectual property, litigation, and professional licensing….\u00a0Tom Hurkmans<\/strong> remains alive and well in Pittsburgh. Tom is president of Duquesne Enterprises, a publicly traded energy and communications company. He enjoyed a recent trip to a working ranch outside of San Antonio, where Tom and his cowpoke friends rode the open plains herding those Texas Longhorns. Yee-ha!…\u00a0Michelle LaMarre-Waldie<\/strong>‘s busy schedule is filled with coaching duties and caring for her three pre-schoolers. She’s been keeping in touch with\u00a0Gail Riley Corcoran<\/strong>, who is also at home with her three children. Michelle says that she and Gail wouldn’t trade their lifestyles for anything, although a free day or two always sounds good!…\u00a0M.A. MacDonald Veneziano<\/strong>has traded the briefcase for the diaper bag this summer following the birth of Madeline. She’s hoping also to spend time with\u00a0Kathy Leonard Bertagna<\/strong> and her newborn, Joey….\u00a0Jeanette McWhan Burney<\/strong> and Dennis bought their first house last August in Boulder. They’re trying to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, but the magic of being homeowners seems to keep eating away at their time. Spring and summer trips to the East Coast were in the works….Laurie<\/strong> and\u00a0Todd O’Brien<\/strong> ’86 are back in Maine. Todd is practicing in Lincoln, and Laurie’s keeping the books while watching over their son, Justin. The O’Briens made the most of the Maine winter by slowly getting into cross country skiing….\u00a0Laurie Pinchbeck Whitsel <\/strong>and Brad bought a house in Ligonier, Pa. Brad now teaches full time at Penn State-Fayette, while Laurie, who has earned her Ph.D., teaches human nutrition part time and works to expand her consulting business. The Whitsels are expecting their second child in the fall….\u00a0Anne Reis Cyr<\/strong> earned her master’s in communication last December at the Univ. of Colorado….\u00a0Steve Sawin<\/strong> and Sheryl moved to Asheville, N.C. He has a fertile infertility practice, and she is teaching Shakespeare at UNC Asheville. Maggie is 3 and Ben is 1. Steve has also found the golf ball really flies at 4,000 feet above sea level…. Among many other things,\u00a0Karl Steudel<\/strong> is conducting a class on the identification of wild edible plants, and dinner is served at the conclusion of class, of course. He’s been honing his television skills by taking acting classes and appearing as an extra in several films shot on location in Boston. Look for\u00a0The Karl Show<\/em> on your local cable station if you’re in the Sudbury, Mass., area. When you’re in Boston, find the nearest music store and pick up a copy of Karl’s\u00a0Coyote Moon,<\/em> a collection of his original piano compositions….\u00a0John Taylor<\/strong> is well in New York City, and was looking forward to\u00a0Dennis Connelly<\/strong>‘s June wedding….Kellie Thibodeau Senghas<\/strong> and\u00a0Peter<\/strong> ’86 are having fun exploring Texas with their two boys. Cowboy hats and boots are on the horizon. Congrats to Kellie for winning the kookiest postcard category…. Newlyweds\u00a0Peter Wassarman<\/strong> and Rebecca are getting settled into their Atherton, Calif., home….Deb Whitney<\/strong> wins the prettiest postcard division and also gets credit for the longdistance award with her entry from Vietnam. She’s in the middle of her second year of teaching at the international school. The big challenge this year was working with fourth- and fifth-grade non-English-speaking Korean children. Her contract was up in June and Africa is tentatively in the plans.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
