Her main business, teaching, continues to expand, and she’s doing international work and has a large contract with a company in Colorado. Her daughter, Alexa (5), is dealing with the issues caused by losing her biological mom. “Thank God for therapy,” Maria concludes….\u00a0Merle Bragdon<\/strong> probably feels the same way. Her five-member psychiatric practice, based in Portland’s Old Port, is prospering. She periodically works with\u00a0Linda Hermans<\/strong> ’76, and sees Linda’s husband\u00a0Richie Goldman <\/strong>’76….\u00a0Peter Brann<\/strong> is now supervising appellate litigation for the Maine attorney general, though he says that he’s been unable to get his twin 3-year-olds to stop taunting one another. Peter has probably kept closer touch than most of us with one classmate,\u00a0Alice Sproul<\/strong>, with whom <\/strong>he spent three years on “another successful attempt at major litigation.”…\u00a0Jeff Brown<\/strong>‘s wife is now in her fourth year of medical school (Sally is thinking about pediatrics or family medicine when she gets done). Matt and “Baby Gic” compete for the highest energy on the planet. Jeff continues to move up in one of the country’s best public-health systems, in Denver…. Co-class presidentsMolly Campbell<\/strong> and\u00a0Nils Bonde-Hendricksen <\/strong>are actively campaigning for reelection. In addition, Nils is competing in tennis playoffs, and Molly recently rode from Boston to Truro on the Cape. Nils is having great luck and working too hard for Sight Resource Corp., which, among other eye-care products, markets equipment for laser surgery….\u00a0Janice Camp Sweeney<\/strong>‘s advertising campaigns on behalf of financial institutions won two first prizes this year from the Chicago Financial Advertisers Assn. — despite competing against all the bank advertising in the area. She’s now director of account services\/senior writer for Crest Communications, the Chicago advertising agency specializing in financial accounts. In Florida,\u00a0Donna Cherick O’Connor<\/strong>moved to “the beach” in Ponte Verde. Though her life is largely controlled by “two children (Kristy is 11, Bryan 4 1\/2), two dogs (English springer spaniels) and two houses,” she reports an amazing work success: her first executive coaching client has been named CEO of a Fortune 100 company….\u00a0Jeanne Cleary <\/strong>is “loving my private practice in transpersonal psychotherapy and mediation.” Jeanne and husband Barry bought a two-family house in Watertown at the beginning of the year. She also sends congratulations to\u00a0Sandy Korpela Radis<\/strong> who “continues to do a superb job as mother to my goddaughter, Kate.”…\u00a0Mike Cloutman<\/strong> has had a complete change of careers. After 17 (!) years at Kimball Union Academy, Mike becomes the first member of our class to retire (from teaching, anyway), and has taken a position with the Albany, N.Y., firm of Bullard McLeod & Associates, which provides financial-planning services for the faculties of independent schools (like KUA, for example). Mike left KUA “with a bang,” however, being named Northern New England lacrosse coach of the year in both ’95 and ’96, and his team finishing 12-0 with two All-Americans….Carol Crow DeBruin<\/strong> reports being “exhausted after my first year as a first-grade teacher, but eager to do it again.” She and\u00a0Rick<\/strong> ’78 have two kids and have recently added a Dalmatian named Caesar to their family….\u00a0Don Earle<\/strong> and family also moved, from Burlington to the New Hampshire coast. Don’s main business is credentialing physicians. “The only problem is we need to figure out how to make money doing it,” says Don, “but the\u00a0pro formas<\/em> indicate that should happen this quarter.” The transition to New Hampshire was tough on wife and preteen daughters, but “being closer to\u00a0Paul Grillo<\/strong> and\u00a0Nils<\/strong> and\u00a0Molly<\/strong> certainly hasn’t hurt.”… Class agent\u00a0Laura deFrancesco<\/strong> is finally back in business after the Danbury Public Library burned down last February. She’s been occupied full time with reconstruction and replacement. But, even more important, Laura’s engaged and is planning a May wedding…. Big changes too forHolly Dill Huntsberger.<\/strong> She’s still working as an occupational therapist and “playing mom to Kate and Carl” (ages 8 and 6). But, the family went through a big change when her husband, Jamie, switched from being a farmer to being a caretaker for an island in Penobscot Bay. They had two weeks to buy a boat and find someone to take care of the animals, among other details….\u00a0L. Shea Dimock<\/strong> reports new romance, and is still working at C.W. Keller & Associates as senior project manager and designer, and becomes president of New England’s Architectural Woodworking Institute in November….\u00a0Mark Diters<\/strong> is the assistant minister at South Congregational Church in Granby, Conn. He’s returned to Yale Divinity School to pursue his master of divinity degree….\u00a0Pat Durning<\/strong> hopes to make it to Reunion….\u00a0Joel Feingold<\/strong> is still keeping folks rocking (and jazzing, etc.) around Boston. He booked the Diana Ross concert at Symphony Hall that was a huge hit. Otherwise, he says his favorite activities are “mowing the lawn, walking the dogs, golf, and drinking less.”…\u00a0Trina Fennell<\/strong> ran the 100th Boston Marathon — the only class member to join the 40,000-plus runners….David Foster<\/strong> becomes a Bates Trustee in October. Other than that, David traveled to Banff and Costa Rica during the early fall. He’s still doing triathlons and the NYC Marathon (not Boston!) again this year, the ninth time…. Never mind the marathons —Steve Hadge <\/strong>has ventured into an ultraeendurance event for the late ’90s: teaching kindergarten. To make matters worse, Steve’s first year was part of a successful test project with\u00a0all-day<\/em> kindergarten….\u00a0Clem Herman <\/strong>recently sold his business in the Netherlands and is now committed to a startup European software venture (too early for many more details). He’s enjoying raising two bilingual kids and keeps in touch with\u00a0David (Large) Nelson<\/strong> ’74 and\u00a0Peter Baxter<\/strong> ’78, who was last sighted in Argentina…. Besides being on the advisory board for\u00a0Bates Magazine<\/em> with me,\u00a0John Howe <\/strong>guided his <\/strong>newspaper to runner-up spot for New England Newspaper of the Year (he’s been in the top rankings most of the time). He’s now the treasurer of the New England Society of Newspaper Editors, and he’s the president of the Gunstock Nordic Ski Team, which includes a lot of “carting my two boys on the Junior Olympic qualifier circuit.”…\u00a0Ken Kulas<\/strong> thinks he’s the first member of our class to have a childgraduate<\/em> from high school. To celebrate (or recover), Ken and his daughter went surfing in Hawaii….\u00a0Joan Lathrop<\/strong> became an “official corporate escapee this year, having joined my husband’s consulting firm — Innotec
\nh — which has been helping companies for 27 years develop new businesses and new products.” She says the challenge of working with one’s spouse only adds to the joy of “having an impact across a wide range of industries and meeting lots of terrific people.”…\u00a0David Longendorfer <\/strong>has just celebrated a first birthday for his daughter, Heather Lynn…. So has\u00a0Austin Lyne<\/strong>: he and Patty just celebrated the 18-month birthday of their first child, Austin F. Lyne III. Pierce House is a goner by 2013! Austin sees\u00a0Nick Dell’Erario<\/strong>,Jim Tonrey<\/strong>, and\u00a0Gary Pugatch<\/strong> ’78, but not enough of\u00a0Dan Quinn<\/strong>….\u00a0Pat Mador<\/strong>transferred to Lincoln County as an assistant district attorney and is spending time “getting more organized and becoming computer literate.”…\u00a0Joren Madsen<\/strong>, who’s a huge success in cardiac surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, simply says, “all’s well in Boston.”… In January,\u00a0Dervilla M. McCann<\/strong> left the Navy after nine years, with the rank of commander (for the uninitiated, she says “that’s three stripes”). Welcome to a 200-year-old house on a pond, a new private medical practice based in Augusta, and private life with Steve and children Liam and Aiden….\u00a0Leslie Mortimer<\/strong>also has a new job, as reference librarian at Clarence Dillon Public Library in Bedminster, N.J., and “loves it.” Leslie keeps in touch with\u00a0Laura deFrancesco<\/strong> andSherry Knudsen<\/strong>, who is reportedly a new mother, too….\u00a0Stan Pelli<\/strong> is proving once again he’s the perfect guy, having worked out a part-lawyer, part-father schedule. Stan does trust and estate work in the Philadelphia area, so if your bequest to Bates (or to your family pet) is not in shape, drop him a note….\u00a0Steve “Ace” Powers<\/strong> is still influenced by something that many of us have forgotten. If you’ve been following Steve’s exploits you already know he’s won most of the journalism awards in Oklahoma, including this year’s first-place Associated Press award for general reporting, and his fifth Oklahoma Assn. of Broadcasters Best Newscast Award. Despite that, the effects of the April 19, 1995, bombing in Oklahoma City have started to take a toll. As Steve says, “My whole perspective on life has changed. Although I did not realize it ’til months later, the Oklahoma City bombing was a catalyst.”…\u00a0Dan Quinn<\/strong> also has a changed perspective on work and life: “I’ve been with Mobil 19 1\/2 years, more than half-way there!” He also just got his 1953 MG-TD back on the road after 12 years in mothballs. Like many members of our class, Dan is coaching a lot: baseball, soccer, and ice hockey for his 4- and 6-year-olds….\u00a0Nancy Schroeter Werner<\/strong> is in the fourth year of her own business, but she says handling a girl-scout troop is the most difficult thing she’s ever done….\u00a0Paul <\/strong>and Barbara <\/strong>’78 Sklarew<\/strong>were in China in January going through the nerve-wracking experience of adopting their new daughter, Olivia Jeanne. Barbara is helping out on her Reunion, so both Paul and Barbara promise to share baby-watching next June in Lewiston….\u00a0Mark Sorenson <\/strong>is doing grassroots organizing to get friends to Maine for Reunion next summer — keep it up! His therapy practice is great, his kids are 8 and 6, and, to make things more challenging, “we just added a dog to the mix.”…\u00a0Jeanne Stake McLaughlin<\/strong> has remarried and has a great PADI-certified business card that lists her title as “divemaster.” She’s living on Virgin Gorda while her husband runs a dive business, but she’s still flying for United Airlines out of Miami International….\u00a0Teri Thomas Tornroos<\/strong> has gone back to work full time and is also in her second year as president of the PTA for daughter Alysse’s school. Other hobbies include building a camp on a small pond near the Adirondack blue line in Salisbury, N.Y., tai kwon do, swimming lessons, etc….\u00a0Jim Tonrey<\/strong> is in Boston and focused on his full-time insurance and investment practice. He’s now the assistant men’s soccer coach at Boston College (hope the fall season is going well)….\u00a0Vicki Tripp Gordan<\/strong> and Scott continue to renovate their old Colonial and enjoy Alexandria (6) and Cassandra (3). She became UNUM’s vice president of corporate strategy and development last summer, and since then has worked on a major divestiture and has managed a start-up line of business…. Besides mastering the on-line world,\u00a0Landi deGregoris Turner<\/strong> is an adjunct professor at Eastern College in Wayne. Her course is “Techniques of Counseling,” and she says the course work meshes well with her psychotherapy practice….\u00a0David Webster <\/strong>“fell into directing the occupational therapy department at the Boston Veterans Affairs hospital.” He’s also coaching soccer, mountain biking, and spending as much time as possible with his family…. New York City got the great (?) idea recently to merge the housing and transit police with the NYPD.\u00a0Jackie Wolfe<\/strong>says she “survived the merge, and I now sit in front of a computer in Coney Island dreaming of going back to patrol.” She’s also building a steady clientele for her massage practice, and hopes to “retire” to it as a second career. Both Jackie and Charlie placed first in their last karate tournament.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
