With alums as guide and host, the Bates Fishing Club angles in the Maine North Woods<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the sky, a cold rain. In the pond, ambivalent fish.<\/p>\n

Even so, the weekend trip last May to West Branch Pond, about 120 miles north of Bates in Maine\u2019s North Woods, sent happy ripples through eight members of the Bates Fishing Club. Credit the pristine surroundings and a Bates vibe that resonated all weekend.<\/p>\n

Whatever Maine is throwing at you, the natural beauty still can hold a trip together,\u201d says trip leader Andrew Wilkie \u201902, a Maine Guide who runs\u00a0Water\u2019s Edge Guide Service<\/a>. The weather was rotten at first, but they were out of bed at 5:30, before breakfast, and stayed on water all day. They stuck with it.<\/p>\n

The fishing and weather finally improved, and the anglers caught 50 or so brook trout (native to the pond, not stocked). \u201cIt\u2019s fun to see the passion of a bunch of amateurs. They were like a bunch of gleeful 10-year-olds,\u201d says Wilkie, who served as club president as a student.<\/p>\n

Except for a few fish cooked for breakfast one morning, all were released. \u201cIt\u2019s an ethic the club abides by,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s pond-side accommodations, at the foot of White Cap Mountain, were at\u00a0West Branch Pond Camps<\/a>, whose proprietor is Eric Stirling \u201997. The fourth generation of his family to run the one-time logging camp, Stirling is a cum laude econ major who\u2019s come home, having been raised on the land. The camps are appropriately rustic, and were featured on the cover of Down East in 2007 and profiled in a food story by The New York Times.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat hospitality, great food,\u201d says Wilkie.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
