{"id":145,"date":"2010-08-03T18:58:21","date_gmt":"2010-08-03T22:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/mathematics\/?page_id=145"},"modified":"2022-06-30T17:27:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T21:27:35","slug":"independent-study","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/mathematics\/academics\/independent-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Independent Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A student who wishes to enroll in 360 Independent Study or s50 Individual Research should begin planning before or during the Preregistration Period and must do the following.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Obtain from the Registrar the required application form and read both sides.<\/li>\n<li>Meet with a potential instructor for the course or unit and discuss:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>the willingness of the instructor to direct the project and<\/li>\n<li>what to put on the form, including a carefully considered title and description of the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<li>Submit the completed form to the Department Chair no later than the last day of the Preregistration Period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The Department will meet to discuss the application, and then take one of the following actions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Approve the proposal, after which the Chair will sign it and return it to the student.<\/li>\n<li>Deny the proposal.<\/li>\n<li>Return the proposal to the student for modification.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the department approves the proposal, either immediately or after modification, the student then brings the proposal to the Office of the Registrar and completes the registration process.<\/p>\n<p>The student and advisor will see that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The project results in a tangible product, as required by the College policy on Independent Study. In most cases the product will be a paper.<\/li>\n<li>Before the end of the semester the student makes a presentation on the project before the Department and its students.
