Mays, Bates Class of 1920.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The format, an all-college gathering followed by a full day of talks, panels, presentation, performance, and film, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/01\/15\/25-years-ago-bates-used-mlk-day-to-help-students-makes-sense-of-persian-gulf-war\/\">influenced by the unique circumstances surrounding the 1991 King Day observance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Jan. 16, 1991, the Persian Gulf War began, the U.S.&#8217;s first major armed conflict in a generation. Two days later, the Bates faculty voted to cancel classes on MLK Day \u2014&nbsp;Monday, Jan. 21 \u2014 &#8220;in honor of and to reflect upon Dr. King&#8217;s contributions to world peace, and to reflect upon the issues of peace and justice in the Middle East,&#8221; in the words of Professor of Religion Marcus Bruce &#8217;77.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An all-college convocation began the MLK Day programming, followed by a full day of events, many using King&#8217;s life and legacy as a means to understand the myriad issues at play,  planned and deployed by an-hoc faculty committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the format we know today emerged in the 1990s, Bates has observed King&#8217;s birthday since the 1980s. In 1986, the first year the federal holiday was observed, Bates welcomed Odella Williamson, a former NAACP chapter leader, to campus. By 1996, this now-familiar Monday format \u2014 morning convocation, including a keynote speaker, and a day of discussion in lieu of classes \u2014 was firmly in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2003\u201304, the college&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/mlk\/about-the-mlk-day-committee\/\">Martin Luther King Jr. Day Planning Committee<\/a> became a standing committee of the
