Clayton Spencer, President of Bates College; and James Reese, Associate Dean of Students for International Students Programs<\/p>\n<p><b>Introduction of Keynote Speaker:<\/b><b> <\/b>Joseph Hall, Associate Professor of History<\/p>\n<p><b>Keynote Address<\/b>: <em>The Half Life of Freedom<br \/>\n<\/em>William Jelani Cobb<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/mlk\/mlk-day-2016-keynote-speaker-william-jelani-cobb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Jelani Cobb<\/a> is an associate professor of history at the University of Connecticut and a staff writer for <em>The New Yorker<\/em>. As a historian, he specializes in post-Civil War African American history, 20th-century American politics, and the history of the Cold War. As a journalist and commentator, Cobb is known for his examinations of issues around race, society, and politics. His books include <em>The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress<\/em>\u00a0(Bloomsbury 2010) and\u00a0<em>To The Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic<\/em>\u00a0(NYU Press 2007), a finalist for the National Award for Arts Writing.
