Learn more about the brilliant, witty, inventive, and cerebral artist, known internationally for six decades of\u00a0The New Yorker<\/em>\u00a0Covers and illustrations, in this lecture by exhibition curator and Museum of Art director Dan Mills. The talk will include Steinberg\u2019s biography, including his difficult childhood and turbulent early adulthood in Romania and Italy and moving to the US, where was celebrated for his drawings and cartoons. Mills will also discuss the multi-talented artist\u2019s collages, drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures, and how Steinberg gave graphic definition to post World War II life, often peeling back the veneer of civilization.\u00a0

Artist Dan Mills\u2019 primary curatorial focus is contemporary\u00a0art. He\u00a0is known for partnering with\u00a0artists and scholars on projects that investigate a wide range of topics. His broad intellectual and\u00a0aesthetic interests\u00a0have shaped adventuresome international curatorial programs at several\u00a0academic museums for over 25 years. Exhibitions he has curated or co-curated have travelled to\u00a0over fifty institutions including\u00a0Brown University,\u00a0Museum of Contemporary Art San\u00a0Diego,\u00a0The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and\u00a0Williams College. Mills has been a\u00a0frequent guest lecturer\/panelist at institutions including the Chicago Cultural Center, Wake\u00a0Forest University, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and guest critic for the Herron School of\u00a0Art, Stanford University, and Utah Museum of\u00a0 Contemporary Art.\u00a0He\u00a0has invited numerous noted guest curators to present compelling projects as part of the exhibition program, and has\u00a0worked with artists ranging from emerging to some of the most influential of our time. Mills\u00a0exhibits his work extensively in the US, and occasionally abroad, with recent solo\u00a0 exhibitions at\u00a0\u00a0the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockland (2019); Museum of Art, University of New\u00a0Hampshire, Durham (2020); and Herron Galleries, Herron School of Art + Design, Indianapolis\u00a0(2020); and an upcoming show at Howard Yezerski Gallery, Boston (2021).\u00a0\u00a0Mills\u00a0has been Director, Museum of Art, and Lecturer in the Humanities, Bates College since 2010.\u00a0\u00a0dan-mills.net<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
