Independent historian Stephen May returns to Bates to discuss the relationship between two of Modernism\u2019s giants: Cezanne and Hartley in a free lecture.<\/p>\n

\"\"May is a sought after speaker on American art and has given lectures at museums, universities, historical societies, and community centers around the country. He has written for numerous periodicals including\u00a0American Artist, American Arts Quarterly, American Heritage, American History, Antiques and The Arts Weekly, Art & Antiques, Art New England, ARTnews, British Heritage, Down East, Early American Life, France Magazine, Islands, MidAtlantic Country, Pennsylvania Heritage, Preservation Magazine, Sculpture Review, Smithsonian Magazine, Southern Accents, Southwest Art, Travel & Leisure, Washingtonian, Watercolor<\/em>, and newspapers including the\u00a0Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, Washington Post,<\/em>\u00a0andWashington Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

May\u2019s first career was in government, 1955\u20131988. He served successively as Executive Assistant to U.S. Senator Kenneth B. Keating; as Mayor of Rochester, NY; as Chairman of the New York State Board of Elections; and as Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development..<\/p>\n

He has practiced law, visited 48 states and 50 countries, and has written and spoken widely about his observations.<\/p>\n

A native of Rochester, NY, May is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wesleyan University, and Georgetown Law School. Nowadays, he divides his time between Washington, DC and mid-coastal Maine. He is married to Kathryn B. Wilson.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
