He has written for numerous periodicals including\u00a0<em>American Artist, American Arts Quarterly, American Heritage, American History, Antiques and The Arts Weekly, Art &amp; Antiques, Art New England, ARTnews, British Heritage, Down East, Early American Life, France Magazine, Islands, MidAtlantic Country, Pennsylvania Heritage, Preservation Magazine, Sculpture Review, Smithsonian Magazine, Southern Accents, Southwest Art, Travel &amp; Leisure, Washingtonian, Watercolor<\/em>, and newspapers including the\u00a0<em>Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, New York Times, Washington Post,<\/em>\u00a0and<em>Washington Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>May\u2019s first career was in government, 1955\u20131988. He served successively as Executive Assistant to U.S. Senator Kenneth B. Keating; as Mayor of Rochester, NY; as Chairman of the New York State Board of Elections; and as Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development..<\/p>\n<p>He has practiced law, visited 48 states and 50 countries, and has written and spoken widely about his observations.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Rochester, NY, May is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Wesleyan University, and Georgetown Law School. Nowadays, he divides his time between Washington, DC and mid-coastal Maine. He is married to Kathryn B.
