{"id":6326,"date":"2012-08-13T16:11:42","date_gmt":"2012-08-13T20:11:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/?post_type=bates_events&#038;p=6326"},"modified":"2012-08-14T14:06:52","modified_gmt":"2012-08-14T18:06:52","slug":"journalist-babak-tafreshi-discusses-the-world-at-night","status":"publish","type":"bates_events","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/events\/journalist-babak-tafreshi-discusses-the-world-at-night\/","title":{"rendered":"Artist Babak Tafreshi Discusses The World At Night"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6327\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6327\" class=\" wp-image-6327\" title=\"Babak Tafreshi\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2012\/08\/Tafreshi-600x478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2012\/08\/Tafreshi-600x478.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2012\/08\/Tafreshi-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2012\/08\/Tafreshi.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Babak Tafreshi<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Award-winning artist and science journalist Babak Tafreshi discusses the importance of the night sky in an artist\u2019s talk 6 p.m. on Monday, October 22 in Olin Arts Center room 104, sponsored by the Bates College Museum of Art in association with its exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/exhibitions\/current\/starstruck\/\">Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography.<\/a>\u00a0 A reception in the Museum follows.\u00a0 Weather permitting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/events\/sky-party\/\">a star party guided<\/a> by local amateur astronomy clubs will be held after the reception, offering visitors a firsthand view of celestial wonders.\u00a0 The public is welcome to all three events, free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>Tafreshi is the founder of The Word At Night (TWANight.org), a non-profit organization promoting world peace and environmental stewardship through an exhibition of photographs of the night sky over prominent earthbound landmarks.\u00a0 \u201cThe eternally peaceful night sky looks the same above symbols of all nations and regions, attesting to the truly unified nature of Earth as a planet rather than an amalgam of human-designated territories,\u201d remarks the artist.\u00a0 He is one of thirty-seven artists from around the world featured in Starstruck.<\/p>\n<p>Tafreshi\u2019s work has garnered him science\u2019s most prestigious imaging honor, the Lennart Nilsson Award, in 2009, for his global contribution to night sky photography.\u00a0 In the same year, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU) have designated TWAN as a Special Project of the International Year of Astronomy.\u00a0 As a science journalist he has contributed to many television and radio programs on astronomy and has interviewed world-renowned astronomers and space scientists. He was editor of the Iranian astronomy magazine (<em>Nojum<\/em>) and is a contributing editor of <em>Sky &amp; Telescope<\/em> Magazine.\u00a0\u00a0 For a decade and has been a board member of the Astronomical Society of Iran&#8217;s outreach committee were he directed many national astronomy events.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBabak Tafreshi is an ideal person to draw together the threads of all the disciplines across the liberal arts,\u201d says Anthony Shostak, the museum\u2019s Curator of Education and the organizer of Starstruck. \u201cHis long experience with journalism and his passion for photography make him a powerful communicator.\u00a0 His photographs in Starstruck are among the most popular with visitors, perhaps because they ground the beauty of the stars with a human environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his visit to the United States, Tafreshi will lead an astrophotography workshop in Maine\u2019s near Maine\u2019s Moosehead Lake, sponsored by the Museum of
