Besides weather, factors such as geographic location, altitude, temperature, local topography, and light pollution must be considered in preparing for a photo session. The main topics of the workshop include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic of Earth-and-sky photography<\/li>\n<li>Guide to the best equipment<\/li>\n<li>Analog vs. Digital, advantages and disadvantages in sky photography<\/li>\n<li>Secrets of landscape astrophotography: exposure, illumination, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Long-term projects in sky photography (planetary motions, Analemma)<\/li>\n<li>Making Digital star trails<\/li>\n<li>Making time-lapse videos of sky<\/li>\n<li>Creating panoramas and virtual realities of night sky photos<\/li>\n<li>Basics of processing your astrophotos.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Workshop Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Babak Tafreshi is a science journalist known throughout the world as an advocate and educator about the night sky.\u00a0 As the founder of TWAN, he has presented some of the most breathtaking images of the starry sky at conferences the world over.\u00a0 He is the co-recipient of science\u2019s most prestigious imaging honor, the Lennart Nilsson Award.\u00a0 Babak has had several of his images featured on NASA\u2019s Astronomy Picture of the Day, and he is one of 37 artists featured in Starstruck: The Fine Art of Astrophotography.<\/p>\n<p><strong>West Branch Pond Camp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>West Branch Pond Camp features an impressive view of\u00a0 Mountain. across West Branch Pond with drive-in convenience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is provided:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lodging in cabins at West Branch Pond Camps.\u00a0 Cabins sleep 4-8 people.\u00a0 A limited number of single-bed cabins are available for an additional fee.\u00a0 Cabins have generator-provided electricity during limited hours, wood stoves and firewood.<\/p>\n<p>Buffet breakfasts, bag lunches, and sit-down dinners<\/p>\n<p>Hot showers<\/p>\n<p>Use of canoes and kayaks<\/p>\n<p>Access to hiking trails<\/p>\n<p><strong>Participants must provide<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Appropriate outdoor clothing and personal basics (toiletries, RED flashlight, regular flashlight, extra batteries, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Photography equipment\u2014camera(s), tripod(s), computer.<\/li>\n<li>Extra batteries and chargers for all devices<\/li>\n<li>Sleeping bag (linens are provided, but for an October trip, this extra layer is important)<\/li>\n<li>Safety-orange hunting clothing (two articles per person). The immediate 30 acres is posted \u201cNo Hunting,\u201d but hunting is popular and precautions are prudent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Not essential, but recommended<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Binoculars<\/li>\n<li>Telescope(s), mount(s), etc.<\/li>\n<li>Solar telescope or filters<\/li>\n<li>Planisphere<\/li>\n<li>Star Charts<\/li>\n<li>Thermal insulating bottle<\/li>\n<li>Backpack<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transportation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Participants must provide their own transportation to West Branch Pond Camps.\u00a0 Carpooling is encouraged and will be coordinated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Number of Participants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Space is available for up to 15 participants.<\/p>\n<p>The trip will take place regardless of weather, offering artists the opportunity to photograph Maine\u2019s wilderness, or just a chance to relax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A non-refundable fee of $300 for adults\/$200 for Bates Students holds a reservation.\u00a0 A balance of $200 for adults\/$100 for Bates Students is due October 15.\u00a0 No refunds will be made after October
