{"id":18325,"date":"2023-05-18T14:26:53","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T18:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/?page_id=18325"},"modified":"2023-06-06T13:07:45","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T17:07:45","slug":"jacques-gamelin-biography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/exhibitions\/jacques-gamelin-biography\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacques Gamelin Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\">Jacques Gamelin (French, 1738\u20131803) <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gamelin first trained in business under Nicolas Joseph de Marcassus, baron de Puymaurin, but seeing his mentee had much more acumen in the arts, Puymaurin paid for his enrollment at the Acad\u00e9mie royale de Toulouse. Five years later, Gamelin won the Acad\u00e9mie&#8217;s first prize. Under Puymaurin&#8217;s financial assistance, Gamelin traveled to Rome to study under Jacques-Louis David, and became painter to Pope Clement XIV. Gamelin returned to France to teach at the Acad\u00e9mie. He is most known today for his epic battle and mythological scenes, found in museums throughout France.
