Known best for his vivid depictions of Victorian England, Dickens authored several works that continue to be read and adapted frequently in the modern world, including A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, and many others. His unique and recognizable style of storytelling gave rise to the eponymous term “Dickensian,” describing works that evoke his rich depictions of the poorest members of society. Partially due to being one of the first authors to have his works published in serialized portions, Dickens became the most popular author of his time, and his works have never gone out of print since their initial publication. His portrait in this show, a bronze plaquette by Goddard, captures his iconic visage in profile.

Ralph Bartlett Goddard,, Charles Dickens Plaquette, 1893, Bronze, cast hollow by Henry Bonnard Bronze Co New York City, 7 5/16 x 7 5/16 in., Bates College Museum of Art, gift of John and Janet Marqusee, 1996.5.23

["post-18396","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
