{"id":18633,"date":"2023-05-19T15:57:24","date_gmt":"2023-05-19T19:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/?page_id=18633"},"modified":"2023-06-06T17:24:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T21:24:13","slug":"herman-wouk-biography","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/exhibitions\/herman-wouk-biography\/","title":{"rendered":"Herman Wouk Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\">Herman Wouk (American, 1915-2019)\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wouk was a dramatist, screenwriter, and award-winning novelist whose works were adapted for Hollywood movies. He published books on both contemporary religion and Judaism. His well-known works were epic war novels published shortly after WWII, including <em>Slattery&#8217;s Hurricane<\/em> and <em>The Caine Mutiny<\/em>, which would be adapted as a play and film. Several of his other works regarding historical fiction and war were also adapted into classic cinema productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wouk majored in philosophy and comparative literature at Columbia University. He edited <em>The Jester,<\/em> a humor journal, and published a humor column for <em>The Spectator<\/em> while a student at Columbia. Wouk started working as a staff writer for radio comedian Fred Allen in 1936. Immediately following Pearl Harbor, he joined the Navy, attended midshipman&#8217;s school, and was assigned as a radio officer on the U.S.S. Zane.
