Born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Wegman received a BFA in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and an MFA in painting from the University of Illinois of Urbana-Champaign. During the 1970s, Wegman began to incorporate dogs into his art to create surreal and sometimes humorous images that subverted the traditional photography style of the time.
