MacDonald, Lewiston High School, 9th and 10th grade &#8211; Career Readiness<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Introduction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This lesson focuses on three works of art as a starting point for students to discover new<br \/>\nthings about themselves and further develop their thought for future dreams, vision, and<br \/>\ngoals (personal and career).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common Core Standard:<\/strong><br \/>\nW.CCR.5: Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Teach It:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific Guidelines:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1: 80 minute block&#8211;<\/strong>Students look at the art piece by Weng Fen, On the Wall, Haikou 6, 2003l\u2026..share what you see\u2026.write down words on the white board&#8212;each student goes to the board with words\u2026\u2026.discuss words, spelling and developing thoughts. Discuss ideas.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6653 alignnone\" title=\"wengfen02\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/wengfen021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/wengfen021.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/wengfen021-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><br \/>\n<sup>Weng Fen<br \/>\n<\/sup><sup>On the Wall, Haikou 6, 2003<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>We will discuss how Weng Fen used symbolism in his work.\u00a0 Looking at the &#8220;what if\u2019s&#8221; or could he be saying, or do you thing this or that.\u00a0 This conversation will be all about brainstorming and ideas. Talking about how metaphors and symbolism are used in writing and how it can be used in their vision\u2014goals for their lives and how they will arrive at that goal. It will be explained to the students that they are encouraged to use symbolism in their developed finished pieces.\u00a0 At this time we will talk about symbolism they have already found in other areas of life, music, other writings; discuss what symbolism is and how to use it.<\/p>\n<p>Students are then asked to sit on that wall.\u00a0 To really go there\u2026.close their eyes and pretend you are there. What would you see if you were there? Use your five senses and tell me what you smell and hear&#8212;-write these thoughts down.\u00a0 Now, is there a smell so strong that you can taste it?\u00a0 What was in \u2018your\u2019 bookbag? What are those papers of yours on the ground all about? Where are you going?\u00a0 Where were you?\u00a0 Why did you stop at this wall? How did you get here, at the wall?\u00a0\u00a0 What can a wall represent in life?\u00a0 Students will go on a journey\u2026..imagine themselves there.\u00a0\u00a0 Share with the class your thoughts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 2: 80 minute block&#8211;<\/strong>Look over what you wrote. Does it makes sense to you on this new day?\u00a0 Now, go back to the wall where you were sitting the other day.\u00a0 Dream, bring \u2018me\u2019 (your teacher) into your mind and take me on a journey of what you hope your life is going to be like.\u00a0 Include for me, how you expect to get to certain points in your life.\u00a0 Who will help you reach your goals?\u00a0 While the students are doing this I will be checking in with them to help them be present at the wall while they think about their future goals in life.\u00a0 Students will share&#8212;pair share and then group share (if desired).<\/p>\n<p>Next we are going further into the All About ME Theme by looking at Alison Hildreth<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong><em>Passages.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong>Again we will discuss symbolism in this art piece. Life Choices\u2026roads we take which lead us to different places in each of our lives, etc.\u00a0 And the students will write about the following questions:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-6654\" title=\"hildreth05\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/hildreth05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"280\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/hildreth05.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/hildreth05-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2013\/01\/hildreth05-295x166.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><br \/>\n<sup>Alison Hildreth<\/sup><br \/>\n<sup>Passages #4, 2006<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>What has made me who I am today? Why do I have the dreams I have for my future? What will hinder me from following through with me dreams? What keeps me on the right track? What are some of the accomplishments I&#8217;ve had in my life so far? What are some other big things I want to achieve in High School? \u00a0What roles do I play in life? What do people think and say about me? Why? What do I think about myself? Why? Where do I see myself in a year, two, five? etc., etc.<\/p>\n<p>Gather back together for a group discussion about how these two art pieces help answer some of these life-goal-vision questions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3: 80 minute block&#8211;<\/strong>Since they will all be doing different project to display there thoughts, goals, vision, and dreams they will individually choose their third art piece from the Bates Gallery collection on the Thousand Word Project.\u00a0 They will look at each of them and then show me which one they identified with and why.\u00a0 This will be a discussion and a brief writing.<\/p>\n<p>Students then will begin their individual final project&#8212;through their written poetry about this topic and put on the computer, their dance routine and then video taped and put on their fb page, their comic story and copied and put on the computer, etc.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How they decide to represent their thoughts will be up to them.\u00a0 I will do individual meetings with each student.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 4, 5,: 80 minute blocks&#8211;<\/strong>students work on individual projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousand Word Project (Symbols and Metaphors), Lynn M.
