These graphite drawings portray images of mysterious cloud-covered mountains and valleys, fog-covered craggy fingers of land jutting into the ocean, and fragmented skylines, in the shroud-covered crepuscular light. Beautifully and skillfully rendered, Bell’s drawings hauntingly capture the mood and mystery of time and place, and embody the forces of nature rather than focusing primarily on descriptive details.

Dozier Bell was born in Lewiston, Maine. She earned a BA from Smith College in 1981, and an MFA at the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. She has been the recipient of NEA, Gottlieb, and Pollock-Krasner Foundation grants, and has attended numerous artists residencies. Bell exhibits extensively throughout the US, including frequent solo shows in New York; Her work is found in numerous collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Metropolitan Life in New York; and the museums at Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby. She is represented by Aucocisco Gallery in Portland and York, and Danese Gallery, New York.

Press:

Portland Phoenix, April 18, 2013
Small scale yields big impact, by Britta Konau

April 6 –
