{"id":3796,"date":"2010-04-19T20:07:44","date_gmt":"2010-04-19T20:07:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub-dev.bates.edu\/museum\/?p=3796"},"modified":"2026-01-22T14:39:48","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T19:39:48","slug":"museum-friends-event-a-conversation-with-carl-little-and-joel-babb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/2010\/04\/19\/museum-friends-event-a-conversation-with-carl-little-and-joel-babb\/","title":{"rendered":"Museum Friends&#8217; Event: A Conversation with Carl Little &amp; Joel Babb"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Special event\u00a0for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x29516.xml\">Friends of the Bates College Museum of Art<\/a>,\u00a0Thursday, June 16<\/h4>\n<div>In conjunction with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/x63832.xml\"><strong><em>Off the Coast: A Landscape Chronology<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/exhibitions\/past-exhibitions\/y2005\/environment-of-landscape\/\"><strong><em>The Environment of Landscape: Works from the Olivia and Ellwood Straub Collection<\/em>,<\/strong><\/a> noted author Carl Little and artist Joel Babb will speak in the Bates College Museum of Art galleries.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><strong>Carl Little<\/strong> is the author of numerous art books, including <em>The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent<\/em> (University of California Press) and, most recently, <em>The Art of Monhegan Island<\/em> (Down East Books). He is a regular contributor to <em>Art New England<\/em> and <em>Art in America<\/em>, where he was formerly associate editor. In 2000 he was presented with the Acadia Arts Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the arts on Mount Desert Island. Little directed the Ethel H. Blum Gallery at College of the Atlantic for eight years and is currently director of communications and marketing at the Maine Community Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joelmbabb.com\/\"><strong>Joel Babb<\/strong><\/a> was graduated from Princeton in 1969 with a degree in Art History, then studied with George Segal and George Ortman before completing an MFA at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University.\u00a0Shortly thereafter he began building a studio and home in Sumner, Maine which became his full-time residence.
