{"id":9736,"date":"2017-03-19T13:50:24","date_gmt":"2017-03-19T17:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/?p=9736"},"modified":"2026-01-22T14:39:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-22T19:39:34","slug":"working-for-the-museum-susan-bell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/2017\/03\/19\/working-for-the-museum-susan-bell\/","title":{"rendered":"Working for the Museum, Susan Bell"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9738\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2017\/03\/Susan-Bell-340x300.jpg\" alt=\"Susan Bell\" width=\"340\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2017\/03\/Susan-Bell-340x300.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2017\/03\/Susan-Bell-200x176.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/museum\/files\/2017\/03\/Susan-Bell.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Jefferson Pinder<em>, Music Missionaries<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>Art \u00a0is like the metamorphosis of a butterfly.\u00a0 It starts with an idea and \u00a0transforms itself into something unique and beautiful.\u00a0 Like a butterfly, sometimes \u00a0the physical transformation can take \u00a0a few days to years to complete.\u00a0 But at the end, the effect of seeing it&#8217;s beauty is the same &#8211; magical! \u00a0 Art is an extension of the artist soul, like creation is to God.\u00a0 It&#8217;s beautiful to behold and can take your breath away.\u00a0 It moves you spiritually, like the sounds of music and the beauty of nature.\u00a0 It can provoke a different impression and interpretation in each individual, like the words of God.\u00a0 Yet, at the end we are in awe at the different techniques, materials and creativity of each work of art, like in God&#8217;s creation of an embryo to baby or seed to flower.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>The world of initially discovering the different art techniques such as: \u00a0oil painting, photography, wood engraving, screen printing, sculpturing, and digital art &#8211; to name a few, is like seeing the different species of a butterfly or flower.\u00a0 The love, time and creativity it took to create it is intriguing and beautiful. The complexity of \u00a0each technique is overwhelming to an admirer, such as myself.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>Visually, art speaks to us.\u00a0 It tells a story without verbalization. It moves us like an unspoken poem.\u00a0 When I view photography by Vivian Maier or even local photographers \u00a0like, Russ Dillingham, I&#8217;m drawn to \u00a0their unspoken story.\u00a0 Their pictures \u00a0capture the essence of life, happiness, despair, hope and serenity, without a spoken word -that is art!<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>Art is a story.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a story with no words. It speaks to us in many ways. We are lured by the Mona Lisa&#8217;a smile \u00a0or the sculptures of Michelangelo.\u00a0 We smile at the whimsical animals of Dahlov Ipcar or spiritually moved by Leonardo \u00a0da Vinci, &#8220;The Last Supper&#8221;.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t need a book to read art, because it&#8217;s a visual book.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need a degree to understand or appreciate \u00a0art or be artistic.\u00a0 Also, art has no language barriers. We can live in different parts of the world and speak different languages and still understand and appreciate art by David Driskell or Winslow Homer.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>Working at Bates college Art Museum, has opened my mind and heart to the world of art.\u00a0 It has lured me into it&#8217;s beauty, story and complexities. It&#8217;s provided opportunities to meet artist and art enthusiast. I&#8217;ve learned the complexities of different art forms, like lithography and woodcuts.
