Bates Digital Music Symposium 2018
CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS AT BATES COLLEGE
NEW ARTIST AND PRACTITIONER SERIES

The Department of Music at Bates College invites compositions and performance proposal submissions from composers and practitioners belonging to historically underrepresented groups, with a focus on musical/sonic/media works for presentation using digital technology for a one-day symposium on music and digital media.
The symposium, which will culminate in an evening concert, will showcase new work by individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, specifically defined as including women, African Americans, Alaska Natives, Arab Americans, Asian Americans, Latinas/os, Native Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.
Proposals may include:
- Performances of works to be presented in a concert presentation
- Hands-on workshops or lecture presentations
Graduate students and emerging practitioners and composers in the field within three years after the date of a terminal degree.
Categories of works include but are not limited to:
- Acousmatic and Spatial Music for 5.1 system
- Audiovisual Work
- Computer-aided Acoustic Composition
- Fixed Media
- Instrument(s) + Electronics
- Laptop Orchestra/Live Coding
- Live Electronics
- Multimedia Works
- Piece + Paper Presentation
- Soundscape Works
- Work for New Interface/Instruments
- Works less than 20 minutes are preferred.
- Composers must perform their own music and live performers up to two could be arranged from a pool of local performers if there is a live component to their piece.
Workshop & Presentation Guidelines:
- All applicants are encouraged to submit additional proposals to present either a twenty-minute lecture presentation or a fifty-minute hands-on workshop.
- Twenty-minute lecture presentations could focus on the technical and/or aesthetic features of the submitted work, including performance, creative practices, and/or technology.
- Fifty-minute hands-on workshops will take place at the Olin Arts Center at Bates College unless otherwise specified. Sessions should engage participants in active learning activities focused on technology. Software available in our lab includes Max, Ableton Live, and Logic Pro. Other shareware/freeware software may be installed for workshops provided ample notice is given. Please contact Hiroya Miura directly (email@example.com) if you wish to submit a proposal that requires software other than that listed.

Invited participants will receive a small honorarium and the travel expenses will be covered. They will be guests of the College from the evening of October 25 through breakfast on October 27, with one-day presentations and concert to occur on October 26.
Where to Submit:
Abstract, CV, and performance material should be submitted in an electronic format to NewScholars2018@bates.edu by July 31. Participants will be notified of acceptance by August 31.
