Elizabeth West Marvin <\/i><\/b>is Professor of Music Theory at the Eastman School of Music, with a dual appointment in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester.\u00a0 She is a past president of the Society for Music Theory and has published widely on music cognition and music theory pedagogy. <\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cLearning How To Improvise:\u00a0 Pedagogical Topics and Thoughts\u201d<\/h4>\n

The study of jazz improvisation (and other improvisational genres) has its special demands. Many aspects of improvisational study is similar to the study of Western Classical music
\ntraditions, however there are also considerations that require specific attention and different solutions. While The Ear is fundamental to all studies of music, its development needs to be addressed in varied ways to meet the demands of the skill set of the improviser.<\/p>\n
