{"id":1741,"date":"2015-07-22T17:20:43","date_gmt":"2015-07-22T21:20:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/music\/?page_id=1741"},"modified":"2021-08-27T15:38:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-27T19:38:22","slug":"music-goal-and-objectives","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/music\/music-goal-and-objectives\/","title":{"rendered":"Goals and Objectives for Majors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><b>Overarching Goal<\/b>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to think <i>in<\/i> music and to think <i>about<\/i> music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Objectives<\/b>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>To gain familiarity with a range of different musical practices and traditions, including selected Western classical, American popular, and non-Western practices.<\/li><li>To learn to create (perform and compose), and analyze music.<\/li><li>To learn to think about cultural, historical, and cognitive dimensions of music.<\/li><li>To develop the ability for sustained thinking in or about music.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Degree Requirements<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Music majors are required to earn a minimum of eleven course credits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUS 210. Classical Music in Western Culture.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AM\/MU 212. How Music Performs Culture: Introduction to Ethnomusicology.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUS 231. Music Theory I. Foundational Concepts of Music Theory.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUS 232. Music Theory II. Diatonic Harmony, Form, and Analysis.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUS 331. Music Theory III. Chromatic Harmony, Form, and Analysis.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MUS 457 or 458. Senior Thesis.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the following cultural musicology courses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>MUS 247. History of Jazz.<\/li><li>MUS 248. Music in Contemporary Popular Culture.<\/li><li>AF\/MU 249. African American Popular Music.<\/li><li>MUS 266. Miles Davis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining courses are chosen in consultation with the thesis advisor.
