{"id":100268,"date":"2016-04-01T00:01:18","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T04:01:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=100268"},"modified":"2016-04-01T16:11:40","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T20:11:40","slug":"garnet-bobcat-subspecies-confirmed-at-bates-from-sightings-and-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/01\/garnet-bobcat-subspecies-confirmed-at-bates-from-sightings-and-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Garnet bobcat subspecies confirmed at Bates from sightings and science"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_100278\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100278\" class=\"wp-image-100278 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"walking4\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/walking4.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bates students, faculty, and staff have grown accustomed to seeing &#8220;Garney,&#8221; a rare but apparently amiable subspecies of bobcat, around campus.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The cat may be out of the bag at Bates.<\/p>\n<p>Recent campus sightings, supported by insights from a Bates evolutionary biologist, confirm the discovery and identification of a new subspecies of <em>Lynx rufus<\/em>, the North American bobcat.<\/p>\n<p>The new subspecies, tentatively given the name <em>Lynx rufus batesiana<\/em>, is distinguished by a garnet-colored coat and, in stark contrast to others of the species, a relatively friendly demeanor.<\/p>\n<p>Students began reporting sightings in early March, and a recent account by Isabelle Marlow \u201819 and Katherina Tran \u201819 is typical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were scared at first,\u201d said Marlow, who, along with Tran, spotted the bobcat that students have nicknamed \u201cGarney\u201d while heading to their campus jobs on March 15.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/youtu.be\/vd6G1Nhp-Yo?t=3s<\/p>\n<p>They\u00a0had a right to be concerned: Bobcats in the wild and in Bates lore are notoriously fierce; the historic Bates fight song, \u201cThe Bobcat,\u201d promises that \u201cclaws will fly and the Bears will die\u201d when the bobcat comes around.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He&#8217;s pretty cool.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But Marlow and Tran stood their ground, and they\u2019re glad they did. \u201cHe seemed pretty friendly, and approachable,\u201d said Marlow. &#8220;He&#8217;s pretty cool,&#8221; Tran added.<\/p>\n<p>While other bobcat subspecies eat small mammals like rodents, rabbits, and the occasional deer, <em>Lynx rufus batesiana<\/em> &#8220;mostly just begs for almond cookies outside Commons,\u201d Tran said.<\/p>\n<p>Don Dearborn, an evolutionary biologist at Bates, says that a new bobcat subspecies is entirely possible from a genetic perspective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA feline\u2019s reddish color simply means that one type of melanin, the red-yellow phaeomelanin, has completely replaced the black or brown type, eumelanin,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The coloring could be due to a genetic mutation. Caused a fright among us, so we retired to the new publik house, the Blue Goose, to calm our nerves with faculty beverages. Shall not tell Brother Cheney that our abstaining hath gone off the rails.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prompted by the campus sightings, Director of Photography and Video Phyllis Graber Jensen reviewed images from the last few years and was stunned to see something new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had seen that garnet blob in my images, but I thought it was a ketchup smudge,\u201d she said. \u201cOr maybe (widely known to be among bobcats&#8217; favorite dishes).<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The discovery of a garnet bobcat gives Bates a leg up in the NESCAC, says Andy Walter, the college\u2019s sports information director, who says that Garney will be a guest on a forthcoming Bates Bobcast.<\/p>\n<p>For years, unconfirmed stories have circulated in the NESCAC regarding mascot-institution sustainability, Walter notes, whether it&#8217;s Middlebury trying to introduce panthers into Vermont or Hamilton trying to clone a soldier from the Continental Army.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m just glad to know that Garney is
