The Emerge Film Festival<\/a> here in Lewiston-Auburn kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday, and this year Bates is one of the principal sponsors.<\/p>\n

So what’s that mean?<\/p>\n

Well, like much of Bates’ engagement with our community, the college’s sponsorship of this fast-growing festival is a two-way street lined with people and partnerships.<\/p>\n

For example, Assistant Professor of Rhetoric Jonathan Cavallero sits on the Emerge board of directors, and he\u2019s integrated his Short Term course, \u201cFilm Festivals and Digital Video Production,\u201d into this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n

\n

Cavallero\u2019s 17 students join 15 other Bates students to form a formidable volunteer posse for Emerge.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur film students will learn the business by seeing it in action. That\u2019s invaluable,\u201d he says. Festival experience will also \u201chelp to remove barriers to their entry into the business\u201d while letting them see \u201cthe variety that exists\u201d in the film world.<\/p>\n

The students have gotten to see work by one of their own, too.<\/p>\n

Emerging filmmaker Nicole Danser \u201915, now a student the USC School of Cinematic Arts, spoke to Cavallero’s class on Thursday and screened her short film Good Art<\/em> on Friday in Schaeffer Theatre.<\/p>\n

Another Bates connection at the festival is Wiebke von Carolsfeld, the lead instructor of \u201cFilmmaking, The Creative Process,\u201d one of the innovative, practitioner-taught courses offered during Short Term.<\/p>\n

She’s showing her film Stay<\/em>, starring Aidan Quinn and Taylor Schilling, at 3:45 p.m. Saturday in Schaeffer.<\/p>\n

Besides working the festival, Cavallero\u2019s students will break into four groups tasked with creating a documentary film that could help Emerge learn more about its identity and rapid growth.<\/p>\n

One Bates group will explore the college\u2019s growing connection to Emerge, \u201cwhat it is, what it could be, what that could mean for students,\u201d Cavallero says.<\/p>\n

The three other groups will do educational outreach in local high schools; examine the interests and needs of Maine filmmakers vis-\u00e0-vis<\/span> Emerge; and look at how the festival audiences react to and embrace the festival and its films.<\/p>\n

Now in its third year, Emerge will screen 40 films selected from some 2,300 submissions from 42 U.S. states and more than 100 countries.<\/p>\n

The festival\u2019s other film venues are the college\u2019s Olin Arts Center, the Community Little Theatre in Auburn, and the Franco Center\u2019s Performance Hall and Heritage Hall in Lewiston.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
