(Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/risingcinemafest.en-html.com\/\">Emerge Film Festival<\/a> here in Lewiston-Auburn kicked off Thursday and runs through Sunday, and this year Bates is one of the principal sponsors.<\/p>\n<p>So what&#8217;s that mean?<\/p>\n<p>Well, like much of Bates&#8217; engagement with our community, the college&#8217;s sponsorship of this fast-growing festival is a two-way street lined with people and partnerships.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur film students will learn the business by seeing it in action.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For example, Assistant Professor of Rhetoric Jonathan Cavallero sits on the Emerge board of directors, and he\u2019s integrated his Short Term course, \u201cFilm Festivals and Digital Video Production,\u201d into this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>Cavallero\u2019s 17 students join 15 other Bates students to form a formidable volunteer posse for Emerge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur film students will learn the business by seeing it in action. That\u2019s invaluable,\u201d he says. examine the interests and needs of Maine filmmakers <span data-dobid=\"hdw\">vis-\u00e0-vis<\/span> Emerge; and look at how the festival audiences react to and embrace the festival and its films.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its third year, Emerge will screen 40 films selected from some 2,300 submissions from 42 U.S. states and more than 100 countries.<\/p>\n<p>The festival\u2019s other film venues are the college\u2019s Olin Arts Center, the Community Little Theatre in Auburn, and the Franco Center\u2019s Performance Hall and Heritage Hall in Lewiston.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like much of Bates&#8217;
