{"id":101695,"date":"2016-06-09T12:38:07","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T16:38:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=101695"},"modified":"2025-02-06T09:21:04","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T14:21:04","slug":"short-term-showcase-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/06\/09\/short-term-showcase-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Five stories from Short Term&#8217;s innovative practitioner-taught courses and course redesigns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the third year running, students and faculty in two distinctive types of Short Term courses showed their stuff at an end-of-term showcase.<\/p>\n<p>Held in Perry Atrium, the event brought together Short Term&#8217;s five practitioner-taught courses and four redesign courses.<\/p>\n<p>The former, often taught by accomplished Bates alumni, expose students to practical and applied areas of study typically not available within the curriculum. The latter courses give faculty time and resources (in the form of student partners) either to create a new academic course or rework an existing one.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at a few instances from this year&#8217;s showcase, held May 25.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Short Term Practicum: &#8220;Music Production, Recording, and Mixing&#8221;<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_101799\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/160525_Short_Term_Showcase_0024.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-101799\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101799\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-101799\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/160525_Short_Term_Showcase_0024-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Listening to mixes by students in a music recording and production course taught by Jonathan Wyman '97. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A list of learning objectives that starts with &#8220;signal flow analysis&#8221; might stop some people, but 16 Bates students nevertheless gravitated straight to &#8220;Music Production, Recording, and Mixing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A practitioner-taught course\u00a0in its second year at Bates, the course was again led by Jonathan Wyman &#8217;97, one of Maine&#8217;s most highly regarded producers and engineers.<\/p>\n<p>The class this year attracted students with widely varying experience that included, in one case, some time in a Nashville studio.<\/p>\n<p>The more experienced students, Wyman noted, helped keep discussions engaging: &#8220;When a question came up, I&#8217;d be able to volley it back to the class rather than talk at the students.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I threw them in the deep end&#8221; mixing-wise, Wyman said. &#8220;I had one big standing rule: You can omit anything, you can mute anything, but not add anything \u2014 not your own back-up vocals, not tambourine or drum loops.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And students who wanted to do otherwise got a valuable insight into creative dynamics between recording engineers and musicians.<\/p>\n<p>At the showcase, Wyman and his students set out a battery of laptops and headphones with which visitors could hear, within the course of a single song, the students&#8217; different approaches to the complex art of mixing a sound recording.<br \/>\n<section class=\"highlight-box \"><\/p>\n<p class=\"highlight-title\">A mix sampler<\/p>\n<p>In this excerpt from the song \u201cEvery October,\u201d written by Chris Ross and recorded for the course by Ross and his band the North, you can hear the mixes change at approximately 10, 30, and 50 seconds \u2014 the changes are most apparent in the drum sounds.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-101695-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/Every_October_Excerpt.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/Every_October_Excerpt.mp3\">https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/Every_October_Excerpt.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>\n<\/section><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Short Term Practicum: \u201cConsulting for Strategy Development\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Yutong Li \u201918 of Shanghai, China, signed up for the Short Term practicum \u201cConsulting for Strategy Development\u201d figuring it would be a five-week foray into conceptual thinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it was a whole different experience,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_101701\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/DSC06812-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-101701\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101701\" class=\"size-large wp-image-101701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/DSC06812-1-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"Students in Fisher Qua's strategy course learned about concepts that stifle organizational change, such as &quot;rigidity trap,&quot; where &quot;results aren't being produced but there's no change happening,&quot; says Yutong Li \u201918 of Shanghai, China. (Jay Burns\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Taught by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sfqua\">Fisher Qua \u201906,<\/a> the class worked with Student Affairs on a hands-on exercise about student health.<\/p>\n<p>They used a set of methods, called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liberatingstructures.com\/\">Liberating Structures<\/a>, looking to &#8220;build a foundation for a peer-to-peer health and wellness model for diverse populations,&#8221; says Erin Foster-Zsiga, a<span class=\"st\">ssociate dean of students for residence life and health education.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;You have to ask questions and listen. You have to ask questions and listen. You can\u2019t assume anything,\u201d Li said about the groundwork that her class did. \u201cYou bring as many people as you can into the discussion because the strategy will affect everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When an organization works on strategy, breaking down hierarchy is key to achieving buy-in. &#8220;It&#8217;s something we often state as a value but rarely have the tools to do so effectively,&#8221; says Qua.<\/p>\n<p>Li says that a big takeaway from the class was learning various. practical ways to achieve this goal of &#8220;bringing equal weight to everyone\u2019s voice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Short Term Course Redesign: &#8220;Atomic and Molecular Structure&#8221;<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A trio of chemistry majors teamed up with Associate Professor of Chemistry Matt C\u00f4t\u00e9 to shake up the gateway intro course, Chemistry 107, \u201cAtomic and Molecular Structure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The challenge: &#8220;Students come to any college with conceptions and misconceptions about chemistry,&#8221; says Sarah Tobin \u201917 of Medfield, Mass., a member of the redesign team.<\/p>\n<p>Once a student develops a misconception, the brain won&#8217;t let go, she says. \u201cYou can give students accurate information\u201d to try to banish the misconception, \u201cbut then if you ask a higher-level question, or allow time to go by, they will revert to the wrong concept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer, says C\u00f4t\u00e9, isn&#8217;t more &#8220;sage on the stage&#8221; teaching.<\/p>\n<p>While lectures can work, C\u00f4t\u00e9 explains, \u201crecent research makes it clear that engaging students more actively in the classroom is often much more effective.&#8221; In fact, so-called active learning helps &#8220;level the playing field for students who may lack strong preparation for a science course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For example, C\u00f4t\u00e9 and his team, which also featured Kacey Wood \u201918 of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Amelia Wilhelm \u201918 of Charlotte, N.C., know from experience that atomic orbitals (stable patterns of electron density around a nucleus) are confusing, as is the fact that electrons display wave-like behavior.<\/p>\n<p>So they created a variety of demonstrations, including ones that show various wave properties.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em style=\"color: #009779;\">C\u00f4t\u00e9 and his team created videos, like this one, that demonstrate wave properties and terms like \u201cnode\u201d and \u201cantinode.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Standing Waves on a String Demo\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7VqUf_MGObs?list=PLDe-zH_5rxH0TxdkexrlNaPaWpKcAYjsv\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>By seeing an accurate, accessible demonstration, a student will then have \u201creliable intuition\u201d when learning about what they can\u2019t see: atomic orbitals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe purposely begin with one-dimensional systems \u2014 the vibrating string \u2014 then move up to two dimensions,\u201d C\u00f4t\u00e9 says. The real thing, atomic and molecular orbitals, &#8220;are the extension into three dimensions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Take the wave term &#8220;node.&#8221; You have know what a node is in order to under stand atomic orbitals,\u201d explains Tobin. \u201cBut it\u2019s a word that students can repeat without every really understanding what it is or what it means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The visual representations, Tobin and the team hope, will \u201creally drive home the idea that \u2018this is the way it is.\u2019 They can see, touch it, and know it exists.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Short Term Course Redesign: &#8220;Global Health&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>By next winter, global health will be much-improved, predicts Megumi Milla \u201916, a sociology major from Roslindale, Mass.<\/p>\n<p>In this instance, &#8220;global health&#8221; is a course, Sociology 235, one that uses sociological methods and theories to explore health and illness around the globe.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_101987\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-101987\" class=\"wp-image-101987 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/06\/160602_World_Health_009-copy-900x643.jpg\" alt=\"During the Short Term Showcase, Taylor's students gave out take-away bundles of items reflecting the varikous global health topics, from reproductive issues to air pollution. (Josh Kuckens\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After teaching the course eight times over 13 years (including twice in South Korea), Associate Professor of Sociology Heidi Taylor figured it was time for a makeover, so she and her team of six students changed everything from readings to the course\u2019s basic approach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The course used to be organized by country,&#8221; explains Milla, so a review of health care in China might look at air pollution, among other topics.<\/p>\n<p>When offered next winter, the course \u201cwill be organized by topic,&#8221; Milla says, so air pollution would be a topic without borders. &#8220;And that will help students make more connections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The comparative approach, says Taylor, will be a boon to students by highlighting \u201chow social, cultural, economic, and historical factors shape a nation\u2019s response to health crises.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new format will also give students a stronger context for understanding certain non-Western health practices that are prone to snap judgement, such as female infanticide or genital cutting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We all are so quick to judge the practices of other cultures,&#8221; Taylor says. As researchers, &#8220;before we can blame a person or a culture for a health crisis, we must take the time to observe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Short Term Practicum: &#8220;Journalism in an Age of Media Explosion&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>The course \u201cJournalism in an Age of Media Explosion,\u201d was a Short Term practicum on journalism taught by Peter Moore \u201978, a veteran editor of <em>Men\u2019s Health<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>Hearing a student talk, you\u2019d think the course was an exit exam for the liberal arts:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">This was very new: the idea of finding stories and going out and investigating them. In a way, we all do it anyway. We see something that makes us think, and we try to puzzle through why that is. But formalizing it in a craft was very interesting and very new to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">When you see something that makes you think, \u201cWait&#8230;what?\u201d you don\u2019t just let that slide. You go out there and figure out what it is, what that thing was that made you take a pause.
