(Josh Kuckens\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Robert C. \u201cBob\u201d Flynn, a three-sport head coach at Bates who elevated the skiing program to national prominence and whose warmth and loyalty to his athletes embodied \u201cthe force, the spirit, and the iconic Bobcat zen\u201d of Bates athletics, died July 31, 2016, at age 83.<\/p>\n<p>Appointed as an assistant coach of football in 1965, Flynn served as head coach of skiing from 1968 to 1990 and as head coach of baseball from 1991 to 1999. He was also head coach of golf for 19 seasons, retiring after the fall 2015 season.<br \/>\n<section class=\"highlight-box \"><\/p>\n<p class=\"highlight-title\">Remembering Bob Flynn and Service Information<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s Bates Athletics Bobcast <a href=\"http:\/\/athletics.bates.edu\/general\/2015-16\/releases\/160804_BatesBobcastEpisode35\" target=\"_blank\">recalls the life of Bob Flynn<\/a>. (Photograph by Steve Fuller &#8217;82)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A member of the Auburn-Lewiston Sports Hall of Fame, the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, and the Maine Ski Hall of Fame, Flynn is credited with elevating the college\u2019s skiing program to the national prominence it continues to enjoy today under his successors, including his daughter, current Nordic head coach Rebecca Flynn Woods \u201989.<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, Flynn took over a resurrected varsity ski program that had been dormant since enjoying success in the mid-1900s. Flynn not only moved Bates into the Division I ranks by 1972 \u2014 aggressively recruiting the best Maine skiers along the way \u2014 but then audaciously worked toward hosting the NCAA National Collegiate Skiing Championships.<\/p>\n<p>In 1976, he succeeded in that goal, and the meet came to Maine with Bates as host. (Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Irons, a director of the Maine Ski Museum who chairs its Hall of Fame Committee, has watched Flynn work his magic through the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always persistent,\u201d Irons says. \u201cThere aren\u2019t many college ski coaches who would even think about hosting the NCAAs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A native of Lewiston, Flynn was an outstanding athlete in football, hockey, skiing, and baseball at Lewiston High School.<\/p>\n<p>Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=flynn-001rob\">played minor league baseball<\/a> from 1952 to 1957, missing the 1953 and 1954 seasons to serve in the U.S. Army in Korea. Though a determined taskmaster, wrote a <em>Bates Student<\/em> sports editor in 1965, &#8220;Coach Flynn was never unjust or impersonal to his players.&#8221; (Steve Fuller &#8217;82 photograph)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He made an immediate impression, so much so that <em>Bates Student<\/em> sports editor Jon Wilska \u201967 devoted his end-of-season column to the rookie line coach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoach Flynn is a hard taskmaster,\u201d Wilska wrote, but \u201cfor all his determination in making his linemen work and his impartial criticism, which was always offered constructively, Coach Flynn was never unjust or impersonal to his players and he gained the highest respect of those who worked for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across all his sports, \u201cit just didn\u2019t matter to him who you were,\u201d says Irons. \u201cHe was nice \u2014 period. He would not say anything bad about anyone. (Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A former president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association and chair of the NCAA Skiing Rules Committee, Flynn received the EISA Service Award for his \u201csignificant contribution and continuing support of skiing in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Bates faculty member in the Department of Physical Education, Flynn was professor emeritus of physical education.<\/p>\n<p>At his induction into the Bates Scholar-Athlete Society in 2015, Flynn was honored for his many years of \u201cencouraging Bates athletes to participate in all Bates had to offer. Most of all, he has assisted Bates students in challenging themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In October 2015, the college named its newly renovated alpine and Nordic ski rooms in Alumni Gym in Flynn\u2019s honor. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Irons attended the event and spoke with many in the huge crowd. \u201cThey all agreed that one of the great experiences of their lives was having Bob Flynn as a coach,\u201d Irons says. \u201cI\u2019ve heard that not just last fall, but for years and years. Every kid who skied for him knew that he would go all the way for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of those skiers was Steve Fuller \u201982, now a Bates trustee. Speaking at the October dedication, he said that \u201cBob\u2019s impact came in the form of access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fuller recalled meeting Flynn at a regional ski meet in Andover, Maine. \u201cHe introduced himself, asked if I was going to college, and mentioned Bates.\u201d To which Fuller replied that college might be a longshot: \u201cNo one else in my family had been to college, and I honestly wasn\u2019t sure if I could make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To which Flynn said, \u201cDon\u2019t worry, we\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d For Fuller and so many others, \u201cwe\u2019ll figure it out\u201d meant the opportunity to receive Flynn\u2019s \u201cunwavering confidence in us as athletes and as human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And that applied for every athlete in every sport.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_102597\" style=\"width: 729px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-102597\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-102597\" class=\"wp-image-102597 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453.jpg\" alt=\"_SMF5453\" width=\"719\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453.jpg 719w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453-599x900.jpg 599w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/08\/SMF5453-133x200.jpg 133w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-102597\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Fuller &#8217;82, who took this photo of Bob Flynn, said that Flynn had &#8220;unwavering confidence in us as athletes and as human beings.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the eve of their famous upset of Amherst College in the 1982 ECAC baseball tournament, Bob Sprague \u201982 was sitting in on a pre-game lunch between the Amherst coaches and the Bates coaches, Chick Leahey \u201952 and his assistant, Flynn, who worked with the Bobcat pitchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Amherst pitching coach was telling Coach Flynn about his rotation for the rest of the ECACs \u2014 basically saying we weren&#8217;t a challenge,\u201d Sprague recalls. \u201cThen Flynnie stands up, says, \u2018You have to get by us first!\u2019 then stalks off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sprague and the Bobcats answered Flynn\u2019s challenge, beating Amherst in 10 innings, with Sprague going the distance.<\/p>\n<p>John Morrissey \u201994, a former Bobcat baseball captain who is now director of alumni relations and head baseball coach at Middlesex School in Concord, Mass., says that while Flynn knew the game inside and out, \u201chis big thing was loyalty to his players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That loyalty was often exhibited with an ebullience that his players cherished.<\/p>\n<p>In a game vs. Hartwick College his junior year, Morrissey hit the first home run of his organized baseball experience, a dream-come-true shot that won the game in the ninth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI rounded third, where Flynnie was coaching, and he was more excited for me than I was. I\u2019ll always hear what he kept saying: \u2018Isn\u2019t this exciting!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His survivors include his wife, Benita Flynn; daughters Elizabeth Flynn P\u201914, P\u201917, Susan Flynn Dorris \u201985, and Rebecca Flynn Woods \u201989, P\u201920; grandchildren Zachary Abbott \u201914, Abigail Abbott \u201917, Jenney Abbott \u201917, Heidi Scheehan, Tyler Dorris, Emma Woods, and Kaelyn Woods \u201920; and nieces and nephews, including Brian Flynn Jr. \u201982.
