Each Tuesday night, a second-floor room in Chase Hall is \u201cwhere the magic happens,” says Amar Ojha \u201917 of Rocky Hill, Conn., co-editor-in-chief of The<\/em> Bates Student<\/em> with Noah Levick \u201917 of Narberth, Pa.<\/p>\n

Tuesday night is production time for the Student<\/em>. Section editors arrive first to work on their articles. Copy editors come next, followed by layout editors, who finalize everything with Levick and Ojha.<\/p>\n

From there, 1,500 copies are printed by the Lewiston Sun Journal <\/em>and delivered on Wednesday to high-traffic areas throughout campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose six or so hours on Tuesday can definitely be intense,” says Levick, “but they’re also a lot of fun because we’re\u00a0hanging out with some awesome people and\u00a0putting together a final product that we’re proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Being a Bates Student<\/em> editor, says Ojha, gives him a \u201cfront-row seat\u201d as campus life plays out. At the same time, he sees the active role a newspaper can play on a college campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe paper has been able to raise questions about specific issues, and oftentimes, we get a reply. It’s that sort of dialogue, that back-and-forth conversation, that is emblematic of Bates’ liberal arts philosophy. And it makes an impact on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

“It’s great to\u00a0have the freedom to express opinions and investigate stories that may not please those in\u00a0power,” says Levick. “One of\u00a0our\u00a0main priorities is\u00a0accuracy, and\u00a0sometimes the most accurate story is not the most flattering to the higher-ups.”<\/p>\n

Though the Student<\/em> is also online<\/a>, the editors are proud of their commitment to print \u2014 especially because the Student<\/em> claims to be the oldest coed college newspaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s still pretty cool to see people walking around, holding the physical\u00a0thing that dozens of writers, editors, and photographers labored to produce,\u201d Levick says.<\/p>\n
