Though fall break made for a small crowd, the reactions were big in the Filene Room as a viewing party scrutinized\u00a0the third and final presidential debate on Oct. 19, 2016.<\/p>\n

Julia Mason \u201917 of Niskayuna, N.Y., had seen only highlights of the previous debates before watching the final debate in its entirety. \u201cIt is frustrating to me to see a lack of attention being devoted to actual policy plans or issues\u201d said Mason, referencing the litany of pressing topics like climate change and immigration that have gone largely unaddressed in the debates.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would call it more of a \u2018reality show\u2019 than a political\u00a0debate,\u201d added Kelsey Pearson \u201917 of Orange, Calif. Watching along with Pearson was Christina Felonis \u201917 of Athens, Greece. \u201cKelsey and I have actually watched all the presidential debates,\u201d explains Felonis. \u201cI have found them to be both informative and concerning.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Seeing and hearing from candidates who fellow citizens believe in to lead our country provides me with some perspective.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Francisco Urueta, a member of the Facilities Services custodial staff, had a simple reaction: \u201cBefore I die, I want to see a woman in the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

Molly Pritz \u201917 of Ithaca, N.Y. offered this measured response: \u201cI think that the\u00a0debates, regardless of the way one will vote, provide an eye-opening experience for viewers. Sometimes we can get trapped in a bubble of like-minded people, but seeing and hearing from candidates who fellow citizens believe in to lead our country provides me with some perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked to summarize the debate in one word, Elise Rivera \u201917 of Washington, D.C., said, \u201cStunning.\u201d Hanna Chipman \u201917 of New York City: \u201cYikes. We must vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

In two weeks, they\u2019ll do just that \u2013 and many in attendance chose to register here rather than at home. \u201cI decided to register here in Maine because I want to vote on the day, in person,\u201d said Mason.<\/p>\n
