{"id":105871,"date":"2017-02-14T15:07:15","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T20:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=105871"},"modified":"2021-02-09T17:27:41","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T22:27:41","slug":"object-lesson-a-historians-life-sized-frederick-douglass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/02\/14\/object-lesson-a-historians-life-sized-frederick-douglass\/","title":{"rendered":"Look What We Found: A historian&#8217;s life-sized cutout of Frederick Douglass"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patrick Otim, a lecturer in history, has a life-sized cutout of Frederick Douglass in his Pettengill Hall office.<\/p>\n<p>The cutout was created early last fall by the history faculty as a way to reach out to prospective history majors in the Class of 2020. Then it moved into Otim&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>A native of northern Uganda, Otim attended high school at Sacred Heart Seminary in the city of Gulu, where the library had a picture of Frederick Douglass along with this quote: &#8220;Some men know the value of education by having it. I know its value by not having it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-105959 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A-900x900.jpg\" alt=\"161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A-900x900.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/02\/161006_Campus_Patrick_Otim_0120_FULL_A.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Otim says that his younger self knew that the picture and quote were &#8220;strategically placed in our library to inspire us to take our studies seriously.&#8221; Still he didn&#8217;t completely grasp the quote&#8217;s meaning back then.<\/p>\n<p>But, &#8220;the name Frederick Douglass stuck with me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meaning came to him in graduate school. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he read <em>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave. <\/em>There, he says, he understood why his high school &#8220;chose Douglass and that quote to be in our library.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When Otim looks at the Douglass cutout in his office today, &#8220;it transports me back to when I was in the seminary. Some of the memories are good, some bad.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He recalls the peaceful, idyllic setting that provided him with a chance for prayer and reflection.
