(Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because they couldn\u2019t bring a whole whale skull home to Maine (it was as big as a kitchen table), they took its inner-ear bones, which are made out of ivory, a compound particularly valuable for carbon dating, explains Retelle.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Maine, they did the dating. \u201cSure enough, we had a progressive, really nice story of how sea level changed in response to how the land rose up as the heavy glaciers retreated,\u201d Retelle says. \u201cKind of a cool story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the walrus skull told a different story.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_106720\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-106720\" class=\"wp-image-106720 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2-400x248.jpg\" alt=\"Mike Retelle's 1993 photograph of the walrus skull as he found it in the Canadian Arctic.\" width=\"400\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2-400x248.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2-900x557.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2-200x124.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/03\/walrus-skull2.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-106720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mike Retelle&#8217;s 1993 photograph of the walrus skull as he first saw it in the Canadian Arctic.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Retelle and his student found that skull, including its tusks, on a spot of ancient shoreline about three miles inland from the existing coast and 20 meters above sea level. \u201cWe thought the skull would help us date the shoreline, but its radiocarbon age was really different from what the elevation would suggest. It was a strange relationship,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out, the walrus had walked inland about three miles from shore and died. As old walruses die, they sometimes \u201cget a little bit crazy and go on walkabout. They\u2019ll go somewhere other than the shoreline to die,\u201d Retelle says. So, \u201chis age represented by radiocarbon had nothing to do with the ancient shoreline he was on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Retelle recalls how he cut the tusks into slices for carbon dating. He took an old table saw onto the Historic Quad, running an extension cord back into Carnegie Science.<\/p>\n<p>That day, a young biologist was interviewing for a faculty position at Bates. \u201cHe was another Arctic guy, and I\u2019m out there with dirty clothes cutting walrus bones, which made a hell of a smell. But he said, \u2018That\u2019s cool,\u2019 and we hit it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was Will Ambrose, and he\u2019s been Retelle\u2019s colleague and collaborator for more than two decades. \u201cWe\u2019ve worked together on a lot of projects in the Arctic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The walrus is now a useful teaching tool that Retelle uses in his climatology class to demonstrate radiocarbon dating in climate reconstruction. And he uses it to explain the superiority of pure ivory over porous mammal bones for carbon dating (the latter collects more modern carbon from lichens and mosses).<\/p>\n<p>Retelle, a hat wearer, has placed many a cap on the walrus.
