The Bates community comprises many smaller ones, and no community harmonizes better than a\u00a0cappella<\/em>.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday night, the Crosstones, one of Bates\u2019 half dozen a cappella<\/em> groups, rehearsed in the Olin Arts center, and this camaraderie was in full voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cCrosstones are my favorite part about Bates,\u201d says Katie Allard \u201919 of Ridgewood, N.J. \u201cIf I could have rehearsal 24\/7, I would. It\u2019s just like one big family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newcomer Sam Findlen-Golden \u201920 of Amherst, Mass., thoroughly enjoys being part of the bass section. \u201cIt\u2019s a blast. We get all the low notes in the song and get to make all the \u2018dum dum\u2019 noises.\u201d Singing with the group has set a sweet tone for his first year. \u201cIt was the first big thing I got into here and it\u2019s been a formative thing in terms of going through my first year,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\t\n\t

The group began rehearsal in a spot favored by\u00a0a\u00a0cappella<\/em>\u00a0groups, thanks to its reverberant acoustics: the lobby between the closed doors of the Bates Museum of Art and the rest of Olin, known as the glass box.<\/p>\n

There, they ran through a few songs at full strength. While they were performing, members of the Manic Optimists, who had finished their own rehearsal elsewhere in Olin, gathered on the other side of the glass doors to watch and listen.<\/p>\n
