It almost always is with Strout,&#8221; adding that one reads a Strout novel &#8220;for the same reason you listen to a requiem: to experience the beauty in sadness.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"106\" data-total-count=\"4195\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/arts\/books\/2017\/04\/20\/even-darkest-most-complex-lives-chance-for-change\/yDc61U6X9ZyJJSVzUYROAM\/story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Boston Globe<\/em> says that the new novel<\/a> &#8220;confirms Strout as one of our most grace-filled, and graceful, writers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her Pulitzer Prize-winning <em>Olive Kitteridge<\/em> mined the depths of regret, &#8220;of the pain that comes from knowing that many things, even most things, are not in fact possible,&#8221; the <em>Globe<\/em> notes.<\/p>\n<p>Yet there&#8217;s also in Strout&#8217;s work &#8220;unbidden, shattering grace,&#8221; says the <em>Globe<\/em>, &#8220;what Flannery O\u2019Connor called &#8216;the almost imperceptible intrusions of grace&#8217; into human lives.
