But once he started, he didn\u2019t stop. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On July 29, the 92-year-old World War II veteran, Bates running standout, and retired Presbyterian minister ran the Chautauqua Old First Night Run\/Walk, sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/chq.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chautauqua Institution<\/a> in New York. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horne wore a Bates sweatshirt as he accepted the Young at Heart Award for being the oldest male finisher. \u201cI wanted to make sure everybody knew I was from Bates,\u201d says Horne, who is president of his class and, as student, was a track captain and a Maine state champion in cross-country.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" >\n\t<a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>Bud Horne's 10 Unofficial Rules for Running and Walking<\/a>\n\t<\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section \"><\/p>\n<p>1. Greet your fellow runners and walkers with a cheery \u201cGood morning!,\u201d or, if huffing and puffing, throw a thumbs-up.<\/p>\n<p>2. Pick up your puppy\u2019s poop.<\/p>\n<p>3. Pick up trash and deposit it in the nearest can.<\/p>\n<p>4. Get out of the way of faster runners.<\/p>\n<p>5. Occasionally, slow down and enjoy the scenery.<\/p>\n<p>6. If raining, splash through the puddles with joyous abandon.<\/p>\n<p>7. If on a recreational run with a partner, go slow enough to carry on a conversation.<\/p>\n<p>8. Wear a cap if the sun is hot.<\/p>\n<p>9. If neither a runner nor a walker, line the route and cheer on the participants.<\/p>\n<p>10. Do not fail to register for the OFN Run\/Walk.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Horne has only missed a few of the races since they started 40 years ago at the famed Chautauqua Institution, a 750-acre education center and retreat where he lives year-round. Three of the Hornes&#8217; eight children are alumni: \u00a0Sandra Horne Marshall \u201976, Ian Horne \u201980, and Donald Horne \u201983.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competitive runners, of course, need to train and watch what they eat, but Horne refers the recreational runner to his \u201cTen unofficial rules for runners and walkers,\u201d a letter to the editor published in <em>The Daily Chautauquan. <\/em>(He originally wanted to call them his Ten Commandments, but the newspaper told him not to, he said.) The <em>Chautauquan<\/em> recently published an <a href=\"http:\/\/chqdaily.com\/2017\/07\/video-bud-horne-takes-old-first-night-runwalk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">audio slideshow about Horne&#8217;s race<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And \u201ckeep at it,\u201d he says. \u201cDo it as often as you can. Take it easy, don\u2019t strain, but do what you can.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past few years, Horne has slowed down, he says.
