{"id":109101,"date":"2017-08-25T10:40:51","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T14:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=109101"},"modified":"2018-07-27T15:14:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T19:14:07","slug":"aesop-leaders-gear-up-for-orientation-centerpiece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/25\/aesop-leaders-gear-up-for-orientation-centerpiece\/","title":{"rendered":"AESOP student leaders gear up for Orientation centerpiece"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sweet spot of any AESOP trip <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the three-night, four-day excursions each incoming first-year takes during Orientation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the third day, says Avery Margerum \u201918 of Wyncote, Pa. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first day, everyone\u2019s new,\u201d he explains. \u201cThe second day, everyone\u2019s kind of tired from the first day. Then the third day, everyone gets a second wind and is more comfortable around each other. (Photo by Theophil Syslo\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing on a trip with the same group for four days, you really get to know the people,\u201d says Adair Andre \u201918 of Edina, Minn., one of three head coordinators. \u201cI think it helps people get out of their comfort zone a little more and get to know people more than the surface-level introductions you have every day.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The getting-to-know-you process is a crucial goal of the college\u2019s nine-day Orientation program that helps the Class of 2021 transition to life at Bates, says Carrie Murphey \u201906, assistant dean of students for first-year programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Murphey, AESOP offers a welcome respite from the intensity of Orientation. \u201cBy the time they head out on their AESOP trips a few days into Orientation, they\u2019ve settled some of those nerves, and they\u2019re ready to connect in a really authentic way with a new set of people and explore and see other things,\u201d Murphey says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blazing the logistical trail to that all-important third day is a momentous endeavor. Starting in January, Andre and the other head coordinators, Kurt Niiler \u201918 of Freedom, N.H. and Katie Hartnett \u201918 of St. Paul, Minn., began to hire assistant coordinators and 112 trip leaders, who would oversee 56 trips around Maine and New Hampshire for 450 first-years<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> everyone except first-year fall athletes in training. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AESOP leaders and coordinators all came together on Aug. 21 for Leadership Week, a jam-packed period of preparation, certification, and community-building.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109174\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/170824_AESOP_Training_0289-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109174\" class=\"wp-image-109174 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/170824_AESOP_Training_0289-1-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"AESOP co-coordinator Kurt Niiler '18 of Freedom, N.H., demonstrates to AESOP trip leaders how to tie a bowline knot and a trucker's hitch knot during training outside of Chase Hall on Aug. 24. There were pots and pans and tarps and tents to sort, as well as food: 68 bottles of hot sauce, 2,061 Nutri-Grain bars, and 131 tubs of cream cheese, to name a few. Empty keytags hung on a wall, ready for keys that will fire up vans and trucks to transport students and gear all over the place. On Tuesday, leaders zipped around the room, filling the boxes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The coordinators and leaders make sure each student feels included on a trip. Extra backpacks and sleeping bags are available for those who can&#8217;t bring their own. A variety of food accommodates different diets. The trip leaders got certified in <\/span>wilderness first aid training<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, completed Green Dot violence prevention training, and heard presentations from college offices on Title IX and diversity in the outdoors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students, Andre says, are \u201cnot just going to be people who are comfortable in the outdoors, it\u2019s going to be all the first-years. They went skating at the Rollodrome and competed in teams to earn points to win prizes<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a dessert-making competition documented on Snapchat, a tall homemade ice cream creation won 100 points.
