{"id":109166,"date":"2017-08-25T12:35:44","date_gmt":"2017-08-25T16:35:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=109166"},"modified":"2022-05-23T16:35:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-23T20:35:43","slug":"follow-me-how-bates-eclipse-party-got-hopping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/25\/follow-me-how-bates-eclipse-party-got-hopping\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Follow me&#8217;: How Bates&#8217; eclipse party got hopping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Shortly after 2 p.m. on Monday, as the moon started to do its thing, Sylvia Deschaine, who is the building coordinator in Carnegie Science Hall, knocked on the door of a crowded second-floor classroom, then entered, much to the surprise of prospective students and their families attending an Admission information session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me,\u201d said Deschaine, in the brogue instilled by her birthplace, Maynooth, Ireland. \u201cThe eclipse is starting, and it\u2019s a once-in-a-lifetime event. The president of the college is here, so come on and follow me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And they did. Admission counselor Jane Ngoc Tran had been leading the session, and she appreciated Deschaine\u2019s spur-of-the-eclipse intervention. \u201cWe\u2019re always looking for something new to share with families. We like to go the flow \u2014 Bates is a spontaneous community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crowd followed Deschaine (\u201cShe got everyone pumped up,\u201d Tran said) outside to the Historic Quad, where an eclipse watch party had drawn a few dozen faculty and staff, including President Clayton Spencer.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Professor of Physics Nathan Lundblad set up a solar telescope, while his colleague Matt C\u00f4t\u00e9, associate professor of chemistry, deployed a homemade viewing device that incorporated an old film camera.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109202\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/170821-eclipse-bates-0530.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109202\" class=\"size-large wp-image-109202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/170821-eclipse-bates-0530-900x675.jpg\" alt=\"Georgette Dumais, an academic administrative assistant, views the eclipse through an old Speed Graphic camera belonging to Associate Professor of Chemisty Matt C\u00f4t\u00e9, who looks on. For Bates visitors on Monday, the eclipse made its mark. \u201cWe will not forget the Bates tour,\u201d said Meg Alexander, visiting Bates from Concord, Mass., with her daughter, Lucy Hirsch. \u201cThis is such a special moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is so exciting,\u201d said parent Jody Culcasi of Northbridge, Mass., visiting Bates with her daughter, Maddie, and husband, Pete. \u201cWe weren\u2019t expecting to be able to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pete Culcasi is a welder for a fabrication shop in Boston, and he was amused that because of the eclipse hoop-la, the world suddenly knew all about the numbering system for eye-protective welding glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost people never know the numbers. I do only because I order the stuff,\u201d he said. \u201cTo hear the number on the news, for people to call you up and ask, \u2018Do you have 14?\u2019 \u2014 wow. Everyone\u2019s calling for 14, but we don\u2019t use 14. We have up to 12. (Jay Burns\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>C\u00f4t\u00e9 had rigged the camera, a Graflex Speed Graphic (the familiar large-format style that news photographers used in the mid-1900s) so that the image was displayed, safe for viewing, on the camera\u2019s ground glass viewer.<\/p>\n<p>It had belonged to his late father, an avid amateur photographer who was a longtime professor of wood science and technology at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.<\/p>\n<p>The night before the eclipse, C\u00f4t\u00e9 stumbled upon the camera in his \u201cmessy storage area\u201d and \u201chauled it out to see if I could use it to view the eclipse.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109200\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/180821-Bates-eclipse-0533.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109200\" class=\"size-large wp-image-109200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/08\/180821-Bates-eclipse-0533-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"Fun with the sun: The partial eclipse is projected onto the Class of 1932 Sun Dial through a pair of binoculars.
