{"id":109644,"date":"2017-09-18T14:10:52","date_gmt":"2017-09-18T18:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=109644"},"modified":"2018-07-27T15:08:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-27T19:08:07","slug":"students-returning-from-time-away-from-bates-gather-to-reflect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/09\/18\/students-returning-from-time-away-from-bates-gather-to-reflect\/","title":{"rendered":"Students returning from time away from Bates gather to reflect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The students who gathered at Multifaith Chaplain Brittany Longsdorf\u2019s home on Sept. 12 found commonality in different experiences: Whether they had studied abroad or somewhere else, worked or interned for a semester, or taken leaves of absences, they had all returned to Bates after time away.<\/p>\n<p>To address that often-challenging transition, the Chaplaincy and Multifaith Fellows Keenan Shields \u201918 and Haley Crim \u201919 organized \u201cFeeling Weird Back at Bates,\u201d an event held each semester to help students reflect on returning and to express feelings and experiences that they feel others might not understand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see it as really giving a space for students to not only say the things that they\u2019re not able to say, but also to be around other people who are feeling weird coming back to Bates,\u201d Shields said.<\/p>\n<p>As the event \u2014 which is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/global-education\/return\/life-beyond-credit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">programming<\/span><\/a> Bates offers for returning students \u2014 began, the students formed a circle in Longsdorf\u2019s backyard.<\/p>\n<p>Shields asked them to introduce themselves and make a \u201cmeter\u201d by putting one arm on top of the other. In this way they checked in. A right angle \u2014 arm pointed upward \u2014 meant they felt good. Arms kept close together meant not-so good. Most were somewhere in the middle.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One word in particular seemed to reverberate: \u201cAlone.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shields and Crim then brought out a ball of yarn and asked the returnees to think of a word to describe their feelings of being back. If another person felt the same way, they\u2019d pass the ball while holding onto the end of the yarn, creating a link from student to student.<\/p>\n<p>As the words tumbled out \u2014 \u201cuncomfortable,\u201d \u201cgrateful,\u201d \u201cawkward\u201d \u2014 the yarn went around and across the circle. One word in particular seemed to reverberate: \u201cAlone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents do feel alone and do feel lonely,\u201d said Raymond Clothier, associate multifaith chaplain. \u201cThat\u2019s partly because they develop new selves or new parts of themselves and aren\u2019t sure where those connect when they come back.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope that\u2019s one thing that they are able to do \u2014 to connect with other students and feel like there are other people who can understand or share similar experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_109700\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/170724_Lots_to_Gardens_0211.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-109700\" class=\"wp-image-109700 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2017\/09\/170724_Lots_to_Gardens_0211-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"Summer Youth Gardeners work in Bates' Wood Street Garden with Keenan Shields '18 of Rochester, N.Y., who has a Harward Center for Community Partnership grant to work with St. Mary's Nutrition Center this summer. The students were then invited to further reflect in small-group discussions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMaybe we just need to take those fleeting moments and take the risk and open up.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Themes emerged: Many are now seniors, about to start their theses. Some were processing loss, having left behind friends or host families in other countries, or feared losing what they had learned through immersion in another culture. Others felt a sense of shock coming back to a residential campus after working or living on their own.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to organizing the event, Shields was a participant. An anthropology major from Pittsford, N.Y., he had spent part of the spring semester doing research in Puerto Rico.
