{"id":112470,"date":"2018-01-19T10:47:04","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T15:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=112470"},"modified":"2019-05-03T12:14:33","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T16:14:33","slug":"student-run-committee-gives-grants-to-community-organizations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/01\/19\/student-run-committee-gives-grants-to-community-organizations\/","title":{"rendered":"Student committee announces Carignan Fund grants to seven L-A groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brie Wilson \u201918 of Lewiston has volunteered and worked with organizations in her community since high school. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when she heard about a Bates student group that gives grants to those organizations, she didn\u2019t hesitate to join. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each year, a student committee convened by the Harward Center for Community Partnerships decides how to disburse money from the James W. Carignan \u201961 and Sally Larson Carignan \u201962 Fund for Community Programs <\/span>\u2014 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each grant up to $2,000 for specific, sustainable projects that help the organization as well as enhance partnerships with Bates students. <\/span>This year&#8217;s grants total $8,787.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI learned how many awesome organizations and people we have in Androscoggin County that are working to better the lives of the people living in the county,\u201d she said. \u201cThere were some organizations that I didn&#8217;t know much about even though I am from the area.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fund was established to honor Jim Carignan \u201961, Dean Emeritus of the College, who died in 2011, and his wife, Sally Larson Carignan \u201962. Since 2007, Bates students have distributed a total of $92,000 to fund projects ranging from materials for Somali Bantu Youth Association of Maine citizenship classes to a smartphone app for the Androscoggin Land Trust. <\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"js-foldaway-sections foldaway-section-header\" >\n\t<a href=\"#\"><span>+<\/span>2017-18 Carignan Grant recipients<\/a>\n\t<\/h5><div class=\"foldaway-section \"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/artvanprogram.org\/\"><b>Art Van<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $1,067 to add an additional 10 weeks to Art Van&#8217;s art therapy service at Lewiston Middle School<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/laarts.org\/\"><b>L\/A Arts<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $1,800 to create a comprehensive online directory of artists who live and work in Lewiston\/Auburn<\/li>\n<li><b>Lewiston Housing Authority:<\/b> $1,000 to create a new reading space only for middle school and high school youth at Hillview<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/lms.lewistonpublicschools.org\/\"><b>Lewiston Middle School<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $300 to purchase &#8220;hi-low&#8221; books (high interest, low reading level) for a classroom for English Language Learners<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ptla.org\/\"><b>Pine Tree Legal<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $1,000 for an office computer and phone that will enable Bates interns to work in the Pine Tree Lewiston office, providing support to Pine Tree&#8217;s paralegals so that they will be able to more effectively meet the needs of Maine&#8217;s residents<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/meirs.org\/\"><b>Maine Immigrant and Refugee Services<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $2,000 to fund a winter indoor soccer program for immigrant and refugee youth (boys and girls)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museumla.org\/\"><b>Museum L-A<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b> $1,620 to finish a \u201cvisitor cards\u201d project<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of this year\u2019s grantees is the Lewiston Housing Authority, which runs an after-school program at its Hillview Apartments. Seeking to encourage older students to participate in the program, Hillview will use its $1,000 Carignan grant to buy books at higher reading levels. (Phyllis Graber Jensen.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The working tools and supplies acquired through Carignan grants are used on an ongoing basis,\u201d said Carla Harris, manager of resident services at Hillview. \u201cYouths\u2019 lives are being impacted in a way that will make a difference now and in their futures.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before they give out the grants, the seven students on the committee, all involved in the Lewiston-Auburn community, get up to speed on the ins and outs of nonprofit work and grant writing. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, Holly Lasagna, a longtime staff member of the Harward Center who is now with Healthy Androscoggin, explained how nonprofits work and what makes a good grant proposal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The students then read each proposal on their own and came back together a week later to discuss which ones to select. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey help each other see things they wouldn\u2019t see otherwise,\u201d said Peggy Rotundo, director of strategic and policy initiatives at the Harward Center and the Carignan fund\u2019s administrator. \u201cThat\u2019s beautiful to watch.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson, who was also on the committee in 2016, said being from Lewiston gave her extra insight into the organizations that applied for grants. Lewiston Middle School, for example, asked for $300 for books for an English Language Learner classroom. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samatar Iman \u201921 of Auburn joined the Carignan committee after being selected for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/harward\/co-curricular\/bonner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bonner Leader Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a four-year program that connects Bates students with community organizations and offers leadership development. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iman said he quickly learned what made a good grant application: While he could see that each organization had needs, proposals that were clear, specific, and sustainable were more likely to be approved. Iman said growing up in Auburn helped him understand how the organizations worked with people in his community. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was able to connect and relate with a lot of the organizations that were coming in with grant proposals,\u201d he said. \u201cI was able to put myself in these people\u2019s shoes and say, \u2018This is actually what we really need.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sitting on the committee also sparked an idea: Iman, a member of the Somali community in Lewiston-Auburn, wants to start a mentorship program for Somali youth, to get them into college and beyond. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bates students will also help to implement projects funded by Carignan grants. For example, students will help Museum L-A create printed \u201cvisitor cards\u201d for self-guided tours, and a Carignan grant will help Pine Tree Legal buy a computer for Bates interns.
