\u201cI am thrilled to welcome Evelynn Hammonds to the Bates board,\u201d said Chair Michael Bonney \u201980, P\u201909, P\u201912, P\u201915. \u201cEvelynn is an accomplished academic leader, a distinguished scholar, and a recognized expert on issues related to race, gender, and science. She will add a uniquely powerful perspective to the work of the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

I look forward to working on behalf of this wonderful institution.\u201d<\/p>\n
At Harvard, Hammonds is also the director of the Program in Race & Gender in Science & Medicine at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research. She previously held senior academic leadership positions at Harvard, including dean of the college and senior vice provost for faculty development and diversity.<\/p>\n
Focusing on the intersection of scientific, medical, and sociopolitical concepts of race in the U.S., Hammonds is an internationally known scholar on issues related to women of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In 2017, she was appointed to the Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine.<\/p>\n
She is the author of Childhood\u2019s Deadly Scourge: The Campaign to Control Diphtheria in New York City, 1880\u20131930 <\/em>(Johns Hopkins University Press, 1999) and numerous scholarly articles. Hammonds is the co-editor of The Nature of Difference: Sciences of Race in the United States from Jefferson to Genomics<\/em> (MIT Press, 2008) with Rebecca Herzig, professor of gender and sexuality studies at Bates.<\/p>\n Hammonds was named a Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer (2003\u201305) by Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. She has been a visiting scholar at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and a fellow in the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J.<\/p>\n Hammonds earned a doctorate at Harvard in the Department of the History of Science, a master\u2019s in physics from MIT, a bachelor\u2019s degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a bachelor\u2019s degree in physics from Spelman College.<\/p>\n
