{"id":113119,"date":"2018-02-14T14:24:21","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T19:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=113119"},"modified":"2024-07-08T16:21:38","modified_gmt":"2024-07-08T20:21:38","slug":"gogol-it-diary-of-a-madman-honored-at-prestigious-theater-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/02\/14\/gogol-it-diary-of-a-madman-honored-at-prestigious-theater-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Bates adaptation of &#8216;Diary of a Madman&#8217; wins theater festival honors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When a delegation from the Bates theater department went to a college theater festival in\u00a0Connecticut last month, their Airbnb lodging turned out to be the erstwhile country getaway for the late king of television variety shows, Ed Sullivan.<\/p>\n<p>The two faculty, one alumnus and four students from Bates were open to any supernatural visitations from Sullivan, but he was a no-show. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A third award went to Senior Lecturer in Theater Katalin Vecsey for her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/09\/slideshow-diary-of-a-madman\/\">stage adaptation<\/a> of Nikolai Gogol&#8217;s 19th-century short story.<\/p>\n<section class=\"highlight-box \"><\/p>\n<p>In March, the Kennedy Center notified Bates that <em>Diary of a Madman<\/em> had received four additional awards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Award, bestowed &#8220;for insisting that theatrical production is central to the urgent community, national and international conversations on the campuses of higher education nationwide&#8221;;<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Production of a New Work;<\/li>\n<li>Distinguished Sound Design and Composition for the work contributed by Bill Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music;<\/li>\n<li>and Distinguished Scenic Design, honoring the work done by Michael Reidy, senior lecturer and managing director of theater and dance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Students are the focus of the festival, which affords opportunities to present work in myriad aspects of theater to a professional audience. For students considering a stage or screen career, both the KCACTF awards and the sheer experience of attending the event are valuable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Students get really good feedback on their work,&#8221; Vecsey says, &#8220;and also good networking opportunities. And that book was assessed by so-called respondents \u2014 judges, more or less \u2014 whom Vescey describes as Broadway stage managers.<\/p>\n<p>The third award went to Rachel Forcillo \u201918 of Grosse Pointe, Mich. She received a Merit Award for Publicity for her <em>Madman<\/em> poster design \u2014 a mosaic image that compiles thousands of still photos to depict the face of Nate Stephenson.<\/p>\n<p>For the poster, Vecsey suggested the photo mosaic, which had a counterpart in some of the monitor imagery onstage. For the image that would ultimately be rendered as the mosaic, Forcillo photographed Stephenson on the set, lighting his face from below in classic scary-tales-around-the-campfire fashion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The entire time, Kati screamed \u2018Be mad! Madder! You are a MADMAN!\u2019 so he\u2019d get into character,\u201d Forcillo says. \u201cI showed her the shot and she was like, \u2018That&#8217;s the one.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with photos taken by Grace Link \u201919 and edited by Lily Kip \u201919, Forcillo painstakingly recolored them to match different regions of the master portrait. Finally, she used an online mosaic generator to match the \u201ctile\u201d photos with the appropriate color regions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe entire time, Kati screamed \u2018Be mad! Madder! You are a MADMAN!\u2019\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another student making a strong showing at the KCACTF was the play&#8217;s sole onstage performer, Nathaniel Stephenson \u201918 of Ellsworth, Maine. Not only did he perform <em>Madman<\/em> twice, but he also auditioned for the esteemed Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship. (Yes, a scholarship established by the actress who played Granny on <em>The Beverly Hillbillie<\/em>s.) (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A double major in theater and in French and francophone studies, Stephenson took Vecsey&#8217;s <em>Madman<\/em> adaptation as his project for a six-week summer training at the Moscow Art Theater last year, and it&#8217;s the topic of his honors thesis project. He aims to start his professional acting career in Boston after graduation.<\/p>\n<p>The Merit Award for Script Adaptation is the second KCACTF award that Vecsey, who also directed <em>Madman<\/em>, has received. The first, in 2013, recognized her interdisciplinary collaboration with Bates composer Bill Matthews, Alice Swanson Esty Professor of Music, for the Bates production of <em>1000 Airplanes on the Roof<\/em>. Matthews also wrote music for <em>Madman<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>What led Vecsey to adapt the Gogol story for the stage? &#8220;Growing up during communism in Hungary,\u201d she says, \u201cI loved the Russian literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story also intrigued her because it is considered one of the earliest literary treatments of schizophrenia. Finally, the notion of adapting a story from 1835 posed a dramaturgical problem that Vecsey found compelling: &#8220;How can you make it relevant today? And would an audience perceive it as, \u2018Yes, this person is really mentally ill\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the challenge, then, involved finding 21st-century equivalents of 19th-century activities. So the protagonist, Everyman (the character that Gogol called Poprishchin) pours his thoughts into a blog instead of the titular diary, for example.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Stephenson and Berger, Bates students attending the festival were Lila Patinkin &#8217;20, Stephenson&#8217;s scene partner in the Irene Ryan Auditions, and Nora Dahlberg &#8217;18, who presented her costume design thesis.
