(Rene Roy for Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delivering his lecture on March 21 as the inaugural holder of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colony Family<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Professorship in Digital and Computational Studies, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jadud offered a vision for an ambitious and inclusive DCS program that &#8220;incorporates opportunities for all our students, no matter where they come from, who they are, or what they want to be.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2016\/02\/26\/digital-computational-q-and-a\/\">has already been done to build the foundation of DCS<\/a>, a program designed to teach students not only the intricacies of coding and programming, but also how to think about the intersection of computing and the liberal arts, and the relationship between technology and the human condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Welcoming the lecture audience, Bates President Clayton Spencer spoke about the early discussions with the Bates family that would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/campaign\/2017\/05\/01\/the-colony-family-supporting-a-unique-american-college\/\">eventually fund the new professorship<\/a>: George Colony and his wife, Ann Colony, who are parents of Bates alumni William \u201912 and Charles \u201917.<\/p>\n<p>When Spencer floated the idea of a computer science program, George Colony had pointed questions \u2014 would such a program would be a \u201cstraight\u201d computer science major or something that could engage a variety of fields? (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat we felt as a gap was actually a huge opportunity to design a new kind of digital and computation program rooted in the liberal arts, deeply interdisciplinary, and committed to the principles of inclusion and equity at the heart of the curriculum and pedagogy,\u201d Spencer said. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWithout George\u2019s early questions, I\u2019m not sure we would have pursued the kind of careful, strategic, and creative process of program design that has led us here today.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the next two years, Bates faculty and administrators from a range of fields <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conceptualized <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an inclusive and interdisciplinary Digital and Computational Studies program. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/campaign\">part of The Bates Campaign<\/a>, the Colony family pledged $3 million to endow the program\u2019s first professorship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout George\u2019s early questions, I\u2019m not sure we would have pursued the kind of careful, strategic, and creative process of program design that has led us here today,\u201d Spencer said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the professorship&#8217;s first holder, Jadud is perfectly suited to be at the helm of such a distinctive computing program. He previously taught in a liberal arts environment at the socially conscious Berea College in Kentucky, and he specializes in computer science pedagogy, tackling questions of teaching, learning, access, and inclusion in technological fields.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At the heart of building DCS, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/12\/15\/qa-matt-jadud-drives-toward-a-fundamentally-inclusive-digital-and-computational-studies-program\/\">has said<\/a>, is a commitment to \u201cstructures that are fundamentally inclusive and that value diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scaffolding in place, Jadud spent his first semester at Bates inviting the community to join the work to build the program. He went on a listening tour of students, faculty, and staff, recording on hundreds of sticky notes what they wanted out of DCS.<\/p>\n<p>Their answers were ambitious: Bates should be a model for other computer science programs. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again and again, Jadud heard that DCS must be inclusive \u2014 introductory courses must meet students where they are, and any student should be able to become a computational thinker. As one note said, the program &#8220;should help <em>all<\/em> students think of themselves as computational thinkers.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have to think about DCS not just as a place where we learn, but also as a confidence-builder,\u201d Jadud said. \u201cStudents cannot walk into a first course and leave saying, \u2018Oh, no, never again.\u2019 They instead have to say, \u2018Oh my. I think I want to do more of this, but I think I want to apply it to the study of biology or the study of chemistry.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Values established, Jadud, his colleagues, and his students went about laying the stones. Jadud taught an introductory programming course and, at his students\u2019 request, is now teaching a follow-up. (Rene Roy for Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo be able to cover as much of the liberal arts as we can is going to be a very powerful message for our students and create a large surface for collaboration and interaction across programs and departments at Bates,\u201d Jadud said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bates got a first taste of that collaboration this winter, when Jadud\u2019s programming course teamed up with the dance and music departments to create performance pieces. DCS students attached sensors to dancers\u2019 bodies that sent data to musical composition software. The dancers\u2019 movements literally created the music they danced to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had over 50 students working together \u2014 six choreographers, about 18 students in music and 30 students in DCS collaborated across these courses, which was itself a powerful learning experience,\u201d Jadud said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another stone \u2014 a complete curriculum \u2014 is as yet unlaid. A DCS student would probably take a course on design thinking: \u201cHow to work effectively with others, how to see ourselves in relation to others and the world, and how to see ourselves being successful and laying a foundation in the study of computation,\u201d Jadud speculated.
