{"id":114269,"date":"2018-03-30T12:59:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-30T16:59:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=114269"},"modified":"2026-01-05T14:58:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-05T19:58:23","slug":"video-student-athletes-present-their-research-at-mount-david-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/03\/30\/video-student-athletes-present-their-research-at-mount-david-summit\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Student athletes present their research at Mount David Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well-represented at the annual Mount David Summit, more than 50 Bobcat varsity athletes either presented research posters or participated in the one of many academic discussions.<\/p>\n<p>We caught up with three of them to discuss their research and hear how both sports and academics have their ups and downs.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Three Bobcats at Mount David Summit 2018\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/262565824?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Football captain and psychology major Frank Williams &#8217;18 of Brookline, Mass., wanted to research a pivotal social issue: police shootings of unarmed black people.<\/p>\n<p>He worked with Associate Professor of Psychology Michael Sargent to come up with a project that investigated the relationship between feelings of power and shooter bias.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball player Reed Mszar &#8217;18 of\u00a0Manassas, Va., a double major in biochemistry and sociology, took his research into the local community, combining his interests to take a look at\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewiston\u2019s French-Canadians who suffer from familial hypercholesterolemia, an inherited genetic condition that creates very high levels of cholesterol at a young age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rower and chemistry major Amelia Wilhelm &#8217;18 of Charlotte, N.C., looked at\u00a0Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes the tick-borne illness Lyme disease. She examined how the bacterium cycles between tick and host and the genetic process known as &#8220;mRNA decay&#8221;, which cells use to turn off gene expression.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s academics or sports, success requires &#8220;hard work and dedication,&#8221; says Mszar. Plus an ability to bounce back from setbacks. &#8220;Some days there\u2019s frustration. You strike out a couple times in baseball, or find a data point that might not be significant.
