{"id":114495,"date":"2018-04-05T10:22:41","date_gmt":"2018-04-05T14:22:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=114495"},"modified":"2024-07-01T15:56:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-01T19:56:53","slug":"bobcat-ventures-awards-9k-to-student-with-retail-space-pitch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/04\/05\/bobcat-ventures-awards-9k-to-student-with-retail-space-pitch\/","title":{"rendered":"Retail space business wins $9K in student pitch competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do potential investors want to know about a new business idea?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few key things, said Chris Barbin \u201993, a Bates trustee and one of three judges for the annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/bobcat-ventures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bobcat Ventures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> student pitch competition, held this year on March 24. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs it a product or a service? Is it sold to a consumer or to a business? Can you define the market? Then you get into the question I ask every person: How do you make money?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat should roll off the tongue in 90 seconds,\u201d Barbin told the 14 student competitors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his own 90-second pitch, Ben Nussbaum \u201919 of Ridgefield, Conn., hit all the marks. His business, Floor, provided a service: It made physical space available to online retailers who sell things people might want to try on before buying. The market would be small apparel and accessory brands in New England. (Courtesy of Ben Nussbaum)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis serves as an easy expansion platform for these brands,\u201d Nussbaum told the three alumni judges, all entrepreneurs: Barbin, CEO of IT firm Appirio Inc.; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/10\/05\/to-be-an-effective-leader-be-prepared-speak-up-and-aim-big-bates-panelists-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jennifer Guckel Porter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201988, managing partner of The Boda Group; and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2014\/05\/14\/eight-tips-from-digital-innovators-schippers-04-and-fisher-06-steer-students-toward-perfect-pitch\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ben Schippers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201904, co-founder of web and mobile app developer HappyFun Corp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pitch won Nussbaum first prize in the competition, with an award of $9,000. (Durotimi Akinkugbe\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The competition is the centerpiece event for Bobcat Ventures, a student-run organization that promotes entrepreneurship. Now in its fourth year, a record 14 individuals or groups made pitches, vying for prize money totaling $15,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/purposeful-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purposeful Work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> initiative, Bobcat Ventures also hosts workshops on business and entrepreneurship, run by people ranging from Bates alumni to Senior Lecturer in Theater Kati Vecsey, who taught the competitors about presentation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou get the fundraising skills,\u201d said Ned Moreland \u201919, a leader of Bobcat Ventures along with El Khansaa Kaddioui \u201920, Cris Thompson \u201919, and Shanina van Gent \u201918. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou get the verbal communication skills. You get to look at business models a lot, you get to look at the ways startups work, and you also figure out what doesn\u2019t work.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skill-building and networking have been helpful for Nussbaum, who\u2019s been going to Bobcat Ventures events since his first year and has participated in the pitch competition twice \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/04\/07\/students-social-enterprise-pitch-wins-9k-bobcat-ventures-competition\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he took home third place for an app for used-car e-commerce. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said that since he started developing business ideas, competing through Bobcat Ventures, and talking to other entrepreneurs in Maine, he\u2019s learned that ideas need to be feasible and focused (he got the idea for Floor after reading research about online retail trends), and that talking to potential customers is crucial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWith any idea, you think it\u2019s whittled down perfectly,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the second you start talking with the people actually paying for your product, it changes. You tweak it with their feedback.\u201d Floor, he said, \u201cmorphed right when I started talking to brands, and I added things and took a lot of things away.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His shoe-leather work showed during the pitch competition. (Courtesy of Ben Nussbaum)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou narrowed down the scope to get to a viable business, and you had a working prototype going with a physical store in Portland,\u201d Barbin told him. \u201cThe complexity and problem statement was big, and you brought it down to something real.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nussbaum shared the total prize money with two other ventures. Swing Tips Pro, created by Nick Lynch \u201919 of Westford, Mass., facilitates golf lessons via video; it won the $4,000 second prize. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2017\/12\/06\/food-system-innovation-award-goes-to-bates-team\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ReHarvest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a group of students who are creating an app that helps \u201cgleaners\u201d access farm crops that are left unharvested and get them to local food banks, won the $2,000 third prize. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clarity, focus, and viability distinguished all the good pitches, Barbin said. But the very best ventures he saw were those that seemed to give the venturers purpose. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnyone can pitch a business,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can tell after time if there\u2019s real passion through the Q&amp;A, when you\u2019re asking the \u2018why\u2019 question. There were a few where you could tell it was meaningful. There was a reason why.
