{"id":114764,"date":"2018-04-12T12:44:53","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T16:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=114764"},"modified":"2018-08-02T14:48:18","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T18:48:18","slug":"video-the-instagram-account-taking-bates-by-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/04\/12\/video-the-instagram-account-taking-bates-by-storm\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: The student-run Instagram account taking Bates by storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, men&#8217;s lacrosse player Otis Klingbeil &#8217;20 of Columbus, Ohio, took on a team task: keeping his teammates informed about the fickle Maine weather so everyone comes to practices and games with the right gear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t want to have to repeat myself 40 times to the guys on the team,&#8221; Klingbeil said. &#8220;So I figured, what better way than to start an Instagram account?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thus was born a phenomenon: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/batesmlaxweather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Batesmlaxweather.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em style=\"color: #009779;\">From A<em>ssistant Sports Information Director <\/em>Aaron Morse, here&#8217;s a video about the student-run Instagram account Batesmlaxweather.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Batesmlaxweather: The Instagram taking the community by storm\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A_VFvkanya0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At first, Batesmlaxweather did only what the name says, providing game-day weather forecasts for players. (Theophil Syslo\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In a parody of Matthew McConaughey&#8217;s Lincoln car commercials, Charles Harker &#8217;19 drives around a snowy downtown Lewiston before an early March game vs. the Wesleyan Cardinals, drawling nonsensical comments about cats and birds: &#8220;In the wintertahm, there are a lotta hungry cats around.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Halfway through the video, Klingbeil snaps at Fein, &#8220;You keeping up with this?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In another sketch, Klingbeil and Maritz lecture Director of Athletics Jason Fein, a relative newcomer, on the NESCAC pecking order. (The Continentals won&#8217;t pose a threat, advises Maritz, because no one makes musket ammo any more.) (Tops is the Bates Photography Club, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instagram.com\/batesphotocats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@batesphotocats,<\/a>\u00a0with more than 1,100 followers.)<\/p>\n<p>Head coach Peter Lasagna is proud of what his players have created. &#8220;It shows that we have smart, funny, and interesting people in our program.&#8221; (Ironically, the coach himself is famously Internet-averse: He has no social media accounts of his own.)<\/p>\n<p>With useful information, an authentic feel, and entertaining content, Batesmlaxweather does what we&#8217;ve long been told social media should do: In this case, create community among a group of Bates students, families, and friends.
