Tax &#8217;em"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tax on over-the-counter diet pills <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could be an effective public-health strategy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to discourage teenagers from purchasing the dangerous and \u201cuseless junk,\u201d according to a first-of-its-kind study coauthored by economics professor Nathan Tefft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $66 billion diet industry faces few regulations, explain Tefft and co-author S. Bryn Austin in their blog post for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaleatingdisorders.org\/blog\/could-diet-pills-tax-help-get-these-toxic-products-out-kids%E2%80%99-hands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the National Eating Disorders Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. (Sarah Crosby\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight-loss products are particularly dangerous, with 23,000 annual emergency room visits <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26465986\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attributable to dietary supplements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Among girls and women, fully a third of these ER visits are caused by weight-loss supplements \u2014 yet teenagers, especially, should<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/early\/2016\/08\/18\/peds.2016-1649\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not take diet pills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what measures can policymakers take to keep diet pills out of the hands of teens? Based on the fact that taxes on cigarettes have been \u201cone of the most effective strategies to date to drive down teen smoking,\u201d the researchers looked at whether \u201ctaxing diet pills might be a solution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The answer is a resounding \u201cyes.\u201d A 20 percent tax on diet pills could lead to a 5.2 percent decrease in overall purchases \u2014 and, importantly, a 17.5 percent decrease among households with teenagers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat may not sound like a lot,\u201d wrote Austin and Tefft, \u201cbut there are over 126 million households in the U.S., and roughly one in five of them purchase these products, so a 5 percent decrease across millions of American households is a lot of diet pills not finding their way into the medicine cabinets in people\u2019s homes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_99721\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-99721\" class=\"wp-image-99721 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2016\/03\/160218_DCS_Faculty_082.jpg 1620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-99721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Associate Professor of Economics Nathan Tefft leads a class.
