{"id":118086,"date":"2018-08-30T10:09:38","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T14:09:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=118086"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:14:46","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:14:46","slug":"opening-day-bates-college-class-of-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/08\/30\/opening-day-bates-college-class-of-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Slideshow: Hour by hour on Opening Day for the Bates Class of 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opening Day for the Class of 2022 was Monday, Aug. 27, and the Bates community turned out in friendly force to welcome and guide Bates&#8217; newest students.<\/p>\n<p>Follow along as Bates Communications photographer Phyllis Graber Jensen, teaming with writers Doug Hubley, Emily McConville, and Jay Burns, captured the day in words and images.<\/p>\n<h3>7:31 a.m.<\/h3>\n<p>Some of the first customers at Forage, a popular Lewiston coffee spot, were Belle Bernhoeft-Gutierrez \u201922 and her parents, getting a leisurely start to what would be a packed day.<\/p>\n<p>The family had flown in from S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, over the weekend, and Bernhoeft-Gutierrez, as an international student, was able to move in early.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s the only time in life you feel so happy and so sad at the same time \u2014 and so proud.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They\u2019d tried to get their bearings on campus the day before. \u201cPeople keep referring to things, and I just nod and smile for a little while,\u201d Bernhoeft-Gutierrez said. Progress was smooth and the new students \u201cwere excited to move in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It was a dancing move-in next door at Kalperis. \u201cI think I\u2019m more excited than some of the first-years,\u201d said Nellie Breen \u201921 of Pasadena, Calif., who danced to Camila Cabelo\u2019s \u201cHavana\u201d as she talked to an observer. \u201cI remember how excited I was when I got here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The music, she said, \u201cadds some character and makes me feel excited just to be standing here dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>8:22:19 a.m.<\/h3>\n<p>A few seconds later, there was a boisterous \u201cYay!\u201d from student greeters as another family arrived. Half-a-dozen or so student, including Breen, descended on the arriving vehicle. One father told her, \u201cBates has been so welcoming today.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>8:51 a.m.<\/h3>\n<p>Outside Commons on Campus Avenue, Bates President Clayton Spencer joined the Bates Welcome Crew \u2014 staff who help with Opening Day \u2014 greeting students as they were dropped off by family members.<\/p>\n<p>She met Enrique Dolores \u201922 of Hailey, Idaho, as he went to check in at Commons, joined by his godfather, Bob Knoebel. but her parents figured that would change after seeing other colleges. &#8220;But I was like, \u2018Nope, this is where I\u2019ll go to school.\u2019 Truth be told, here I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That didn\u2019t preclude a little sibling sadness over leaving home for the first time. Lizzie said she was \u201chalf on the good side, because she\u2019ll be close, but half on the bad side because she\u2019s going to be gone on my birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019ll be lots of FaceTime, lots of letter-sending,\u201d Anna said. \u201cBut I can\u2019t wait to be here. And when the first-years and families finally start showing up, the campus comes back to life, and it reminds us why we love this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>9:52 a.m.<\/h3>\n<p>On the second floor of Chu Hall, Opening Day helpers, first-years, and parents darted back and forth between rooms, elevators, and staircases.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI get so pumped, so excited, because the kids have so much to offer.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Up came bedding, boxes, and storage containers full of belongings, mini fridges, and, in the case of Peter Philbin \u201922 of Bedford, N.H., a double bass. A feeling of comfort,\u201d he said. \u201cNow, it\u2019s the feeling of comfort knowing that my son belongs at Bates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to let go. It\u2019s going to be tough heading down the turnpike.
