The name of the college’s social-science building is spelled “Pettengill” \u2014 with two E’s and an I. The Lewiston street and former elementary school, however, are each spelled \u201cPettingill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the city park in Auburn is \u201cPettengill.\u201d Here\u2019s your P\u2019gill guide:<\/p>\n

The Hall<\/h5>\n

Pettengill Hall at Bates is named for Frederick B. \u201cPat\u201d Pettengill \u201931 and his wife, Ursula.<\/p><\/div>\n

A native of Pembroke, N.H., Frederick B. \u201cPat\u201d Pettengill \u201931 was called \u201cMr. Bates\u201d for recruiting many students from the Syracuse, N.Y., area.<\/p>\n

When he died, in 1986, a small bequest (including proceeds from the sale of his Chrysler car) created a scholarship endowment.<\/p>\n

But that was just the beginning. In 1999, his widow, Ursula, gave $5 million to name Pettengill Hall.<\/p>\n

The Street<\/h5>\n

A block north of campus, Pettingill Street is named for David Pettingill, Lewiston\u2019s second settler.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pettingills were a fighting race,\u201d the Lewiston Evening Journal<\/em> noted long ago, and David fought and died at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.<\/p>\n

The School<\/h5>\n

Built in 1926 and closed in 2008, the former Pettingill elementary school near Bates was named not for the street but for Lee Duren Pettingill, a leading citizen of the early 1900s. (His relation to David Pettingill is unknown.) The two-plus acres is now a park, Pettingill School Park.<\/p>\n

Park Deux<\/h5>\n

In 1947, the city of Auburn used 20 acres bought years before from William Wallace Pettengill to create a recreation area, Pettengill Park. It cost $20,091, or about $342,000 in today\u2019s dollars.<\/p>\n

The park includes a community center,\u00a0 baseball and softball fields, basketball courts, playground areas, and a fishing pond.<\/p>\n

After World War II, during the golden age of Maine semi-pro baseball, Pettengill Park was home to the legendary Auburn Asas. Facing teams like the Augusta Millionaires, Farmington Flyers, and Dixfield Dixies, the Asas (pronounced \u201cAces\u201d) easily drew several thousand fans to games \u201cunder the bulbs\u201d at Pettengill Park.<\/p>\n

But There\u2019s More<\/h5>\n

The name is said to mean \u201csomeone from Portugal.\u201d A retired Social Security analyst, Robert Pettengill, once found 41 variant spellings \u2014 including Patongille, Pattainggal and Petynghale \u2014 among the 5,700 Americans with the surname.<\/p>\n
