{"id":118350,"date":"2018-09-13T10:18:32","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T14:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=118350"},"modified":"2026-01-12T15:14:38","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T20:14:38","slug":"bates-college-professors-excited-to-teach-its-something-old-something-new","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/13\/bates-college-professors-excited-to-teach-its-something-old-something-new\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven Bates professors share topics and courses they&#8217;re excited to teach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Bates professors lined up for Convocation last week, we asked a few what they\u2019re excited to teach this fall.<\/p>\n<p>In sum, they told us about some things old, some things new, and some things renewed.<\/p>\n<p>In his second year at Bates, Assistant Professor of English Jos\u00e9 Villagrana is teaching a new course, \u201cMilton and the English Civil War.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Milton, of course, is a canonical figure in literature. The course will also delve into questions of how certain colonizing practices are \u201cestablished and perpetuated through archaeology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Bates faculty member since 1991, Professor of Physics Hong Lin is trying something new this year: teaching one of the department\u2019s upper-level courses, \u201cElectrodynamics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be my first time teaching this course, but I love the topic,\u201d she says. (Jay Burns\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In one of 39 First-Year Seminars, which are geared toward the college\u2019s newest students, Professor of Anthropology Elizabeth Eames will teach \u201cDisney Demystified: Race, Gender, and Sexuality in the Magic Kingdom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Popular culture being what it is, \u201cwe all have a bit of Disney in us,\u201d Eames says. In other words, \u201cDisney is a cultural text. And from that text, we can discern America\u2019s beliefs and values. (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cMy students will look at data already collected from teachers, who are working to be more restorative in their practices,\u201d Nigro says. Restorative justice tries to \u201creplace the old-fashioned punitive disciplinary practices with practices that <em>repair<\/em> the harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raj Saha \u201903, a lecturer in geology and physics, is eager to teach his First-Year Seminar, \u201cThe Living Planet,\u201d and hopes his students are ready for a surprise.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_118354\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-118354\" class=\"wp-image-118354 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180904_Convocation_0626.jpg 1919w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-118354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Raj Saha \u201903, a lecturer in geology and physics, is teaching a First-Year Seminar, \u201cThe Living Planet.&#8221; (Phyllis Graber Jensen\/Bates College)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In its examination of intricate connections among the Earth\u2019s living systems, the course sits \u201cat the intersection of math, science, environmental studies, and social justice,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>It might surprise these new Bates students, he says, \u201cthat there is scientific basis for concepts that we often label as moral or ethical, such as the need for diversity, what diversity does in an ecosystem, and how you can translate these qualities to society in general \u2014 what makes us more resilient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Su Langdon, a lecturer in psychology, is excited to have more time to teach \u201cPrinciples of Psychology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drawing from the tenets of problem-based learning, the course uses \u201cconsider scenarios,\u201d in which students look at real-life situations from psychological perspectives. For example, how do gymnasts and other athletes accomplish complex motoric tasks? Why do we feel \u201call gooey inside\u201d when we think about someone we\u2019re attracted to?<\/p>\n<p>Having taught the course a \u201cgazillion times,\u201d Langdon wanted the flexibility to add a few more scenarios, including ones her students suggested.
