One of the first things he\u2019d like students to see upon their arrival is his toy collection, lined up on his desk. Take Mister Rogers, who \u201cplayed a large role in influencing who I want to be as a human,\u201d Rocque says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there\u2019s a Ninja Turtle, an updated version of a toy that he had as a boy, who\u2019s dressed as a Union soldier and reflects his childhood interest in the Civil War. One of his two bobbleheads is a memento from sociology department colleague Mark Owens; the other was a giveaway from the Xander Boagerts Boston Red Sox Splash Bobblehead game he attended with family members this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180912_Michael_Rocque_Toys_0265-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/files\/2018\/09\/180912_Michael_Rocque_Toys_0187-900x600.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Favorite toys. And last but not least are his squeezable <em>Ghostbuster<\/em> toys \u2014 perfect fidget toys for students who are studying for finals or are trying to finish their senior theses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rocque\u2019s students appreciate the display. The Ghostbusters &#8220;Rat&#8221; and \u201cSlimer\u201d were favorites of his honors thesis student Anna Rose Franceschetti \u201918, who made a beeline for the squeezable toys during every visit. (<a href=\"https:\/\/scarab.bates.edu\/honorstheses\/265\/\">Her thesis<\/a> looks at the drug use on the opioid epidemic among the Maine lobster fishing community.) It might be the first time squeezable toys have made it into a yearlong honors thesis acknowledgment: \u201cI have endless appreciation for my thesis adviser, Michael Rocque.
