{"id":118447,"date":"2018-09-14T09:48:11","date_gmt":"2018-09-14T13:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/?p=118447"},"modified":"2018-09-14T13:44:45","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T17:44:45","slug":"video-bates-football-prepares-to-deploy-the-air-raid-offense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bates.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/14\/video-bates-football-prepares-to-deploy-the-air-raid-offense\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Bates football learns the high-flying air raid offense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fans who&#8217;ve seen Bates football run-run-run the ball on offense in recent years are in for something completely different when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsnsports.net\/colleges\/bates\/\">Bobcats host Amherst<\/a> at 1 p.m. Saturday for the 2018 season opener.<\/p>\n<p>The Bobcats are about to flip the script.<\/p>\n<p>New head coach Malik Hall and his coaching staff have brought the air raid offense to Bates, which has run the triple option for the last eight years.<\/p>\n<p>The offense is well-known at the Division I level, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gobatesbobcats.com\/sports\/fball\/2018-19\/releases\/20180731l97ljg\">Hall has coached in recent years<\/a>, and it puts a premium on passing, with up to five receivers running routes. Where Bates ran the ball 70 percent of the time in 2017, the Bobcats could flip that ratio in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to sum up the new offense, quarterback Brendan Costa &#8217;21 of\u00a0Westport, Mass., says, &#8220;throw, throw, throw!&#8221; But it&#8217;s a little more complicated than that.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Football season preview: The air raid offense comes to Bates College\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_dvbsXc4NaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s where new offensive coordinator Custavious Patterson comes in. Described by wide receiver Marcus Ross &#8217;19 of\u00a0Mansfield, Texas, as a &#8220;coaching genius,&#8221; Patterson comes to Bates after stints at Wagner and Fordham universities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We led the nation in total offense at Fordham when I was there,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I remember that it took them a little longer to catch on&#8221; than his Bates players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These kids here are like geniuses. They&#8217;ve caught on and acclimated really, really fast.
